Ike Reighard is on a mission to help people exchange ordinary living for an extraordinary life through Jesus Christ. It is a message fit for a pulpit, but the Southern Baptist pastor has found it equally powerful in corporate America. More than a year ago, Reighard, 53, did some exchanging of his own - leaving the traditional pulpit to take his God-inspired message into the marketplace as Chief People Officer and executive vice president of Atlanta-based HomeBanc Mortgage Corp. In doing so, Reighard left NorthStar Church in Kennesaw, Ga., which he had founded in 1997. Suddenly, he found himself on the threshold of a new ministry in which evangelism has no boundaries. "We as ministers have bought into a great fallacy that the only way youre going to be in fulltime ministry is if it is absolutely church-related vocationally," Reighard says. "I know that at my core of cores, Im called to be a pastor. (But) I can serve God equally well in whatever door of opportunity that hes opened for me." Still, walking through the door of … [Read more...]
Years later, they still remember well ‘when God came to town’
"I remember the day when the love of God landed in our town. He took all the silent and broken hearts, fixed them up and gave them a sound. "I remember the day when the love of God landed in our town. He took all the silent and broken hearts, fixed them up and gave them a sound. You had almost every different kind of kid from every different kind of social background. Taking all the cool they had and praising God, as he spun them around. When God came to town." Tose words by Gabriel Wilson are not just the lyrics to another song by his Christian band called the "Rock N Roll Worship Circus." They also recount a very real time when the Holy Spirit swept into the lives of teenagers in Wilsons hometown of Longview, Wash. The song was birthed as Wilson began talking out loud to his band members during a sound check one night. Although written in a matter of minutes, "Gift of Cool" had been "brewing in me for awhile," he says. Justin Rossetti remembers the time Wilson cites. He was a high school teenager at the time. "I was brought up Catholic, but when I turned 16 years old, I wanted to be extreme," Rossetti notes. He began using hardcore … [Read more...]
Ban on same-sex marriages on its way to state voters
It is all but settled - Louisiana citizens will decide whether to add a ban on same-sex marriages to their state constitution or not this fall. It is all but settled - Louisiana citizens will decide whether to add a ban on same-sex marriages to their state constitution or not this fall. On the same day last week, the Louisiana House and Senate both voted to put a proposed amendment on a fall ballot. The House voted 87-11 for the same-sex ban, while the Senate voted 31-4. Both vote totals were more than the two-thirds margin needed for the measure. House members debated the issue for 75 minutes before voting. Supporters of the amendment cheered passage of the amendment proposal from the gallery. Thirty minutes later, they cheered again as state senators followed suit. Meanwhile, supporters predicted overwhelming approval of the proposed amendment by voters. While same-sex marriages already are banned by Louisiana law, they say the constitutional amendment is needed to guarantee that state courts do not step in and reinterpret or strike down those existing statutes. The proposed amendment also would prohibit Louisiana from recognizing … [Read more...]
What is this same-sex marriage issue all about anyway?
With Massachusetts now the only state to recognize same-sex marriages, the movement to legalize it nationally begins. With Massachusetts now the only state to recognize same-sex marriages, the movement to legalize it nationally begins. While other areas have made moves to recognize same-sex marriages, Massachusetts began issuing legal marriage licenses to same-sex couples earlier this month. With that action in mind, following is a list of common questions regarding the issue - with answers. How does the Massachusetts decision impact the rest of the country? Same-sex couples married in Massachusetts now have stronger legal grounds to sue in federal court and ask that their marriage licenses be recognized elsewhere. In addition, a lawsuit could take place in a state court where justices may be inclined to issue a favorable ruling - for instance, in New Jersey, which is known to have one of the nations more liberal high courts. Either way, same-sex "marriage" could spread far beyond Massachusetts. Could this lead to same-sex marriages in all 50 states? Many experts believe it could. In order for same-sex "marriage" to spread nationally, a 1996 law known as the Defense of Marriage Act must be … [Read more...]
Checking the present – and future ( Part 1 )
Checking the present - and future: Growth rates now are plateaued for the SBC - but efforts are underway to recover focus Checking the present - and future: Growth rates now are plateaued for the SBC - but efforts are underway to recover focus It is way more than about time somebody had the nerve to say it - and one Southern Baptist denominational leader finally has. For years now, Southern Baptist leaders have taken no small amount of pride in being at the head of the largest Protestant denomination in America. For years now, they have pointed to annual reports that showed increased numbers in membership and various key denominational categories. For years now, they have spoken of the Southern Baptist Convention as a major spiritual force in American society, too large, too powerful to ignore. But those precious annual numbers do not lie - and someone finally has said so. First, check the primary numbers as reflected in 2003 Annual Church Profile reports prepared by individual Southern Baptist congregations and compiled by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Southern Baptist Convention reported a … [Read more...]
Checking the present – and future ( Part 2 )
So, exactly what is wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention? What happened to all the growth promised by denominational leaders in recent years? So, exactly what is wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention? What happened to all the growth promised by denominational leaders in recent years? And could Sunday School actually hold the key to jumpstarting the convention growth engine? Perhaps, a pair of recent papers suggest. That the Southern Baptist Convention has reached a stall period is beyond doubt. But what to do about it is a more difficult assessment. However, a pair of papers posted by the Baptist Center for Theology and Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary last fall offer a suggestion a revival and reinvention of an evangelistic Sunday School. Indeed, in an examination of membership growth and evangelism patterns during the 20th century, William Day notes a troubling decline in growth rates since the 1950s. For instance, from 1995-2000, the rate of growth in Southern Baptist membership fell to only 1.9 percent. Meanwhile, while annual baptisms rose from 1900 to 1960, they since have plateaued. And while it took less than 20 Southern Baptists to baptize one person prior to 1935, it … [Read more...]
Weekly Briefs
For the week of April 1, 2004 Missions worker update The lone survivor of a March 15 attack on five Southern Baptist humanitarian aid workers in Iraq is back in the United States and recuperating better than doctors expected. Carrie Taylor McDonnall arrived March 20 at a Dallas-area hospital and underwent surgery there March 24. Doctors say they are "very pleased" with her progress. McDonnall received wounds in the chest, face and all four limbs in the attack, which killed her husband, David, and co-workers Karen Watson and Larry and Jean Elliott. The doctors reported that arm and leg bones shattered by small arms fire are aligned and healing - and McDonnalls facial injuries do not appear to require reconstructive surgery. And while McDonnall lost most of three fingers on her left hand, her thumb and middle finger are intact, leaving her with a functional hand. McDonnall had recovered enough to send a message to be read at a graveside service for her husband. Walk Like a Wildcat Louisiana College has scheduled a "Walk Like a Wildcat" event to give high school students a chance to visit the Pineville campus and learn about the school. High school students will have the chance … [Read more...]
North American Mission Board’s needs are as great as its mission
Given the opportunity, Southern Baptists demonstrate again and again a unified commitment to missions. A case in point is the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions. Given the opportunity, Southern Baptists demonstrate again and again a unified commitment to missions. A case in point is the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions. While giving to the Cooperative Program has slowed in some state conventions, giving to the three major missions offerings - international, North American, state - has remained solid. Word came recently that last years giving to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions hit another record. In spite of what seems to be an economic downturn over the last couple of years, giving to the offering last year was 1 percent over the previous years. All told, the offering hit $49,560,279 in 2003. That was last year. What will Southern Baptists and Louisiana Baptists do this year? The need for missions and evangelism in our homeland has not been greater in recent decades than it is today. For instance, ecumenical ministerial alliances in many Louisiana cities and towns must now ask themselves, … [Read more...]
Fallen Baptist worker leaves reminder – ‘When God calls, there are no regrets’
A handwritten letter from Karen Watson to her pastors is proof the Southern Baptist missions worker was resolved to obey God as he called her to follow him past the comforts of home and into a faraway land where millions need to know him. A handwritten letter from Karen Watson to her pastors is proof the Southern Baptist missions worker was resolved to obey God as he called her to follow him past the comforts of home and into a faraway land where millions need to know him. The commitment eventually cost Watson, 38, her life. She was one of four humanitarian aid workers who died in Iraq after their vehicle was ambushed March 15. Larry and Jean Elliott of Cary, N.C., and David McDonnall of Rowlett, Texas, also perished. McDonnalls wife, Carrie, was severely injured in the attack and remains in stable condition at a hospital in Dallas. "When God calls there are no regrets," Watson wrote in a letter to Phil Neighbors and Roger Spradlin, co-pastors of Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, Calif., where she was a member since 1997. The letter is dated March 7, 2003. It was written just before Watson left for the Middle East and was meant to be opened only upon her … [Read more...]
Slain Baptist worker was ‘on-mission … all the time,’ friend recalls
David McDonnall was a master storyteller who was willing to die so that others could hear the story of Jesus, close friends said in a memorial service for the slain missions worker last week. David McDonnall was a master storyteller who was willing to die so that others could hear the story of Jesus, close friends said in a memorial service for the slain missions worker last week. He was an "on-mission Christian all the time," friend Chris McKinney said. McKinney drew laughter and nods of agreement from the crowd packed into the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary auditorium as he told about a time he and McDonnall were standing in line at Wendys. "All of a sudden, I heard David speaking in Arabic back behind me," McKinney said. "All I could think was, ... Hes found the only Arabic-speaking people in all of southwest Fort Worth and hes talking to them. ... "Within 30 seconds of being at Wendys, David was on mission for Jesus Christ, sharing the gospel with these people who had probably never heard it before." McDonnall was one of four Southern Baptist missions workers killed in an attack near Mosul, Iraq, earlier this month. He was a … [Read more...]
