By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer DRY PRONG, La. (LBM) – New Prospect Baptist Church recently raised $1,368 for the Georgia Barnette Louisiana Missions Offering during its annual fall festival and cook-off competition featuring many of the state’s iconic dishes. The event, held Oct. 21 on the church’s park track, drew more than 300 members of the community who sampled foods from each of the 13 teams from NPBC and other churches. Their dishes included jambalaya, gumbo, chicken and sausage sauce piquant, sweet potato casserole, crawfish etouffee, pastalaya, roasted pig, shrimp and corn bisque, corn maque choux, red beans and rice, and beignets. After they sampled the food, festival goers then voted by donating money (that was then given to the GBO) for their favorite dish for the People’s Choice Award that was won by a team from Bethel Baptist Church, Colfax. Their winning dish netted $250 alone for the GBO, the annual missions offering named after Louisiana’s first Woman’s Missionary Union director. The event also featured a dessert bar, trunk or treating, an obstacle course, tailgate-style games and Christian contemporary music and prayer walk. “When thinking about how we were going to promote Georgia … [Read more...]
Jamie and Tara Dew to LCU students: Embrace God’s calling
By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer PINEVILLE, La. (LBM) – Whether as a pastor or a lay leader, all Christ followers are called to embrace God’s calling on their lives, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary President Jamie Dew and his wife, Tara, told Louisiana Christian University students, Oct. 31. “If you are a Christian, you're a follower of Jesus Christ, then you have been called out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of light, which means you are an ambassador, you are part of the royal priesthood, to love God, and to make Him known,” Tara Dew said. “The Great Commission is not just for the pastors and the missionaries, and the student pastors, it is for every believer, and so as you are going about you are to teach what God has commanded and you are to make disciples.” The Dews shared with students in the chapel service that as they pursue God’s calling, they can use five ways to discern it: Scripture, sustained seasons of submission, active service now, cultivated burdens of passions and confirmation from the body of believers. Jamie Dew stated finding God’s calling is not a quick process but rather one that can take many years to come to fruition. Dew referenced his own calling to be … [Read more...]

Philip Caples, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Coushatta, contacted the Baptist Message, Oct. 23, to share that he was “excited” to make the nomination because Endris “loves Jesus, loves and leads his family to follow Jesus, and leads his church to embrace the community, state and world for the purpose of reaching the lost for Jesus.” The yearly gathering of Louisiana Baptists is scheduled to be held in the facilities of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, Nov. 14. OCC celebrates 30 years of giving hope of Jesus to children at Christmas
By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer PINEVILLE, La. (LBM) – Louisiana Baptists will have the opportunity to join thousands across the world to share the ultimate gift to children in other countries during the 30th anniversary of Operation Christmas Child. Formed in 1993 by Samaritan’s Purse, OCC allows churches and individuals to bring gift-filled shoeboxes to relay stations across the country that are then processed and shipped to local partners around the world with a means of reaching out to children in their communities with the good news of Jesus Christ. National Collection Week is Nov. 13-20. Though the gifts are simple [small toys, hygiene items and school supplies] they still bring a smile to children who may be affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease. Mary Deen, an OCC regional spokesperson in Louisiana and a member of Journey Church, Pineville, told the Baptist Message the effort provides an opportunity for Christ followers to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children who may not receive any other gift. “Operation Christmas Child is one of the most effective evangelistic ministries,” she said. “According to our statistics released last month, because of our … [Read more...]
Actress alum to speak at 8th annual Values and Ethics Series
By LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) - Actress and Louisiana Christian University alumna Kayce Clark will deliver a message on the influence of the media in everyday life at the 8th Annual Values and Ethics Series, Nov. 2. “Our media-driven world is so easily influenced by what we see on screen, what we hear on the radio, and by the examples set by celebrities,” said Clark, advocacy director for Reflective Media Productions and a 2004 graduate of LCU with a degree in theater arts. “That influence is not going away and is growing by the day, but there is something we can do as a Christian community.” With an unwavering commitment to creating powerful theatre and film projects that not only entertain but also point to the truth of Jesus Christ, Clark has worked in the entertainment industry for more than 20 years. She challenges audiences to use their talents and gifts to the glory of God and to guard against the negative impact of certain media. “Instead of shying away from media and entertainment venues, we are taking the tool Satan is using to try to destroy us and we are turning it on its head, and using it for the Kingdom,” Clark said. “Christian production companies, such as Reflective Media Productions, and … [Read more...]
Louisiana Baptists’ Mike Johnson elected House speaker
By Will Hall, Baptist Message executive editor WASHINGTON (LBM) – U.S. Congressman Mike Johnson, a member of Cypress Baptist Church in Benton, Louisiana, has been elected House speaker, meaning he is second in the line of succession if President Joe Biden should be unable to serve. Johnson garnered 220 Republican votes in favor versus 209 Democrat votes against in the Oct. 25 House vote. Two seats in the House are vacant (one Democrat, one Republican) and four members did not vote (three Democrats, one Republican). The office of speaker has been vacant since Oct. 3, when Matt Gaetz, a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, led a GOP minority (eight congressmen) to join with Democrats to oust Kevin McCarthy, a member of Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, California, from this key leadership position. The drama was amplified by the failures of Majority Leader Steve Scalise, also of Louisiana, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, of Ohio, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, of Minnesota, to capture enough support from their Republican colleagues to overcome the Democrats’ block of votes in their respective bids to be elected speaker. OVERWHELMING PRAISE Johnson has enjoyed overwhelming praise from … [Read more...]
Merelin McCon retires, returns to disciple others
By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer WALKER, La. (LBM) – Merelin McCon retired from Judson Baptist Church in 2010 but returned “home” in 2016 to teach a Bible study and disciple others at the church he pastored for 33 years. “It’s been awesome, and I have thankful I was able to return here,” McCon told the Baptist Message. “I didn’t even want to come to Judson to pastor here years ago. But I’m thankful I said, ‘Yes’ to that opportunity, and it’s been so special coming back and helping others grow in their walks with Christ.” McCon (who actively pastored 55 years) was named a Louisiana Baptist Convention Exemplary Bi-vocational Pastor of the Year for his dedication to ministry. A native of Colyell, McCon was 13 years old when he surrendered his heart to Christ during a service at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Baton Rouge. Four years later, McCon submitted to the call to preach the Gospel. He began his education to prepare for ministry at Louisiana College (now Louisiana Christian University), in 1957, and during his senior year began a pastorate with the Twin Bridges Baptist Church in Alexandria, two days after he married his wife, Edith. Later he served as pastor with Magnolia Baptist Church, Holden … [Read more...]
