Miller promoted to Louisiana College VP for communications and integrative marketing

May 12, 2017

PINEVILLE (LCNews) - Louisiana College President Rick Brewer has promoted Norm Miller to vice president for communications and integrative marketing, effective immediately. Originally employed in August 2014 for the communications and marketing role, Miller maintained that role as assistant to President Brewer within two months of his arrival at LC in April 2015. “Norm brings to our efforts at Louisiana College decades of journalism and public relations experience, as well as life-long affiliation with Southern Baptist churches,” Brewer said. “With his years of professional experience, he understands the goals of Christian higher education and the aspirations of Christian parents who want the most for their college-bound children.” Miller’s responsibilities include oversight of the College’s external communications, website and social media, as well as multi-media advertising and internal communications support related to other LC initiatives. “In my years of professional experience, few, if any leader I have met or served demonstrates such a high level of integrity as Dr. Brewer,” Miller said. “For Dr. Brewer, integrity is not an article of clothing to be donned as a situation may demand, but is what defines him as a … [Read more...]

Executive Board issues firm counsel to ERLC, pledges ‘to pray’

May 11, 2017

By Will Hall, Message Editor WOODWORTH – The Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board has forwarded a letter to the Ethics and Religious Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention acknowledging an apology from the ERLC trustee officers and Russell Moore, the embattled president of the entity, relating to the rift Moore created in the Southern Baptist Convention. The letter is a balance of firmly stated counsel and an attempt “to look for a positive, rather than punitive ways to work with the ERLC going forward,” following a second statement issued by Moore that was more direct than his first attempt in apologizing for controversies that led to a motion, made at the 2016 LBC Annual Meeting by Clark Stewart, pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Covington, to “study the recent actions of the SBC Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission with regard to issues of concern to Louisiana Baptists.” The letter cites Moore’s latest statement as “key in helping the Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board arrive at a proper response to the referred motion.” BACKGROUND Moore was a strident opponent of then-candidate Donald J. Trump, and he castigated Trump’s evangelical supporters, calling them drunks and “doctrinally … [Read more...]

Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board’s letter to Russell Moore, ERLC Trustees

May 11, 2017

May 4, 2017 Dr. Russell Moore & ERLC Board of Trustees 901 Commerce Street, Suite 550 Nashville, TN 37203 Dear Dr. Moore and Trustees: A motion was made at the 2016 Louisiana Baptist Convention Annual Meeting to ask the Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board to "study the recent actions of the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission with regard to issues of concern to Louisiana Baptists." The Convention referred the matter to the Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board. As the leaders of the Executive Board prepared to address this matter, Dr. Moore was kind enough to arrange a meeting with Executive Director, Dr. David Hankins, Executive Board President, Dr. Eddie Wren and Louisiana Baptist Convention President, Dr. Gevan Spinney. This meeting was very helpful, though not conclusive, in our process. As the leaders continued to study the matter, Dr. Moore and the ERLC leadership released the statement entitled “Seeking Unity in the Southern Baptist Convention” on March 20, 2017. This statement was key in helping the Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board arrive at a proper response to the referred motion referenced above. We want to commend Dr. Moore for plainly confessing his failings … [Read more...]

Seeking unity in the Southern Baptist Convention

May 11, 2017

From the ERLC Executive Committee Our country has come through one of the more challenging political cycles in recent history. Evangelical Christians, and Southern Baptists in particular, faced difficult issues and decisions, which, at times, frayed and threatened even to tear the fabric of our civic and denominational unity. It is in this difficult context that Dr. Russell Moore has exercised leadership with integrity and with boldness. We affirm Dr. Moore in his leadership of the ERLC. He has spoken with clarity and conviction on ethical matters that have been identified in our Baptist Faith and Message and various Convention resolutions. These included issues related to religious liberty, racial reconciliation, character in public office, and a Christian understanding of sexuality. Most importantly, he has endeavored clearly and graciously to articulate the Christian gospel and its implications. For us not to stand in affirmation of the principles that Dr. Moore has espoused would be unfaithful to the mission entrusted to us by the Convention. Speaking to these issues is rarely convenient and often unpopular. While the manner, tone, and extent to which we speak to these issues is a matter of wisdom and timeliness, the … [Read more...]
