Gus, my personal ‘angel’

August 25, 2023

Often in my life, I have been aware of the Lord’s protection. He has covered me with His wings during storms; He has carried me when I could not walk alone; He has surrounded me during miles of travel; He has strengthened me when I was afraid; and He has comforted me when I was hurting. … [Read more...]

FIRST PERSON: Small churches can be ‘global,’ too

August 22, 2023

By Mike Holloway WEST MONROE, La. (LBM) – Louisiana Baptist congregations get to celebrate being part of some wonderful ministries around the world. By giving through the Cooperative Program, we are part of God’s work around the globe. But sometimes smaller congregations also wish they could do overseas missions “on their own,” too. However, it’s often difficult to do because of modest resources. Still, we learned at Ouachita Baptist Church that even with our moderately sized membership we could make a direct impact to the ends of the earth. Three years ago, we were contacted on Facebook by an interpreter in Zambia who had assisted me during a week of evangelism there nearly two decades earlier. Edward Mulenga was now the pastor of “Word of Truth Ministries,” but the congregation had no building. Still, he simply asked us to partner with his church in prayer. And we did. Through that commitment, God began to move us to help these fellow believers, half a world away. It was a step of faith for several reasons. About 200 worshipers regularly gather each week in our West Monroe facilities. But 2020 was punctuated with COVID stay-at-home mandates. Also, we were engaged in a focused effort to pay off our … [Read more...]

Let us pray for all things ‘back to school’

August 11, 2023

By Steve Horn ALEXANDRIA, La. - Since I was four years old, this time of the year has meant “Back to School.” I have either been in school, Linett’s been teaching school, I’ve been teaching, or our boys have been in school. Many years, more than one of us were involved in school at some level. We’re still “going back to school” with Dru. This is a time ripe for prayer. Let me encourage us to be praying about all things “back to school.” Pray for our teachers—What a mission field they have! Pray for our students—Pray for their physical safety and spiritual safety. Pray for our Baptist College, Louisiana Christian University—Dr. Brewer has indicated to me his desire to adopt our language of a “culture of evangelism.” I have the opportunity to speak to this effect at both student orientation and a faculty meeting. Pray indeed for a “culture of evangelism” to exist at LCU. Pray for our BCM’s—You know the importance of engaging new students and reengaging returning students in the early days of this new semester. Pray for our churches—Back to school time is prime time in the life of the local church. Ministries that have been put on pause for the summer are starting again. Pastors have been waiting to get through the summer to … [Read more...]

Should Christians care about American history?

August 8, 2023

A 2019 poll found that only 27% of Americans under the age of 45 have a basic knowledge of American history. Sadly, the next generation is also struggling. According to NAEP standards in 2022, only 13% of the schoolchildren of America are proficient in the subject. This leads to the question: should Christians be concerned? … [Read more...]

You say you’re pro-life, but what are you doing about it

July 27, 2023

By Baylie McClafferty Most recently noted by the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System in the United States, there are roughly 400,000 children currently in foster care. Considering that there are roughly 210 million Christians in America, the math is simple. If every Christian household rescued a child and fostered them, there would be no children left in the foster care system. … [Read more...]

Understanding Southern Baptist Convention data: Part two

July 24, 2023

By Chuck Kelley In my last blog, I shared the most important truth to keep in mind about official SBC data: The numbers are the numbers. A second important truth for which all Southern Baptists should be grateful is: The numbers are accessible. … [Read more...]

Understanding Southern Baptist Convention data, part one

July 17, 2023

By Chuck Kelley You can make one important assumption whenever you consider any official SBC data: The numbers are the numbers. Sometimes the numbers may encourage you. Sometimes the numbers may discourage you. At times, the numbers may truly surprise or befuddle you, but at all times be confident that the numbers in official SBC records are the result of SBC data gatherers having done their best to build the most accurate numerical record possible. … [Read more...]

Five reasons you must see ‘Sound of Freedom’

July 10, 2023

I really didn’t want to see this movie. Does anyone want to see a movie about horrific crimes against children and the systems that support or fail to stop child sex trafficking? But I felt an obligation to support “Sound of Freedom.” And I was happy to hear the buzz in the conservative media sphere. “Sound of Freedom” was making noise in all the right places. … [Read more...]

EDITORIAL: Hallowed be thy name

June 28, 2023

By Will Hall, Baptist Message executive editor ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – The 10 Commandments may be viewed from several perspectives: -- Some believers see them simply as a list of dos and don’ts. -- Others consider them in the context of their origins: As the first formal instruction to the Hebrew nation after escaping from Egypt, these were something of a primer for Israel to transition from being a people of Pharoah for 400 years to becoming the people of the one true God in perpetuity. -- More, still, look at these basic tenets in terms of how they are grouped (the first four address a relationship with God; the fifth involves family relationships; and the last five broadly describe relationships with everyone else). Together, these commandments reveal a hierarchy of relationships within the relational world God created for us as relational beings. In other words, God tells us to make Him the priority in our relationships, then family (and by inference, marriage) and, finally, yet importantly, our neighbors. Regardless, in all three perspectives, the stricture in the third commandment is the same: Do not use God’s name in vain. It is a key to obedience. It is an essential element of how we set ourselves apart … [Read more...]

EDITORIAL – Paid family leave: A ‘peace’ agreement for a post-Roe world.

June 23, 2023

By Gene Mills, Louisiana Family Forum president BATON ROUGE, La. (LBM) -- After working my entire career to promote principled family policy and protect human life, I am still moved with emotion by the gigantic shift which occurred on June 24, 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court announced its correct decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. I am privileged to be in Washington D.C. on the anniversary of this historic moment leading a delegation of the next generation of Louisiana leaders. In many respects, the work is just beginning as we forge a path forward in crafting family policy. One issue provides an opportunity for agreement across the political spectrum. Most Americans agree that there is a need for paid leave after the birth or adoption of a new baby. Seventy-one percent of registered voters support paid gamily leave for parents, crossing party, gender, and ideological lines (65% of conservatives, 68% of moderates, 83% of liberals).1 Parents need time to bond with their newborns. Mothers need time to recuperate physically after childbirth. Both fathers and babies benefit from the connection established in those first weeks. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 23% of workers (9% of low-wage workers) have … [Read more...]
