Louisiana College’s TEACH goes 100 percent online

May 12, 2020

By Norm Miller, LC executive assistant to the president for communications and marketing PINEVILLE, La. (LCNews)—Louisiana College’s nationally accredited TEACH certification program goes 100 percent online this summer in response to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Students usually travel from all corners of Louisiana to the Pineville campus to earn teaching credentials, but now the trip will be via computer, not car. The digital move of Louisiana College’s fast track TEACH program should appeal to those who seek certification but are apprehensive about travel bans and social distancing, said Dr. Amy Craig, Dean of the School of Education at LC. “The online approach helps answer these concerns and adds to the advantages we offer.” Louisiana’s 2020 Elementary Teacher of the Year Jessica Borlund said, “Through LC’s TEACH/MAT program, I fulfilled my dream of becoming a teacher, enhanced my educational skills, and built upon my knowledge of classroom strategies.” Borlund described LC’s atmosphere as “caring and intentional. The professors were always available to guide and encourage me as I needed it.” Exclusive to Louisiana College is that successful TEACH completers may apply all 21 hours of the practitioner … [Read more...]

Governor announces Phase One for churches, businesses

May 11, 2020

By Message Staff BATON ROUGE, La. (LBM) – Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Monday that churches and many other businesses in the state can reopen, with certain restrictions, when a new order is issued Friday. The order will move the state into Phase One of reopening the economy by lifting restrictions that previously limited public gatherings to 10 people or fewer. Louisianans will be under the new order through June 5. “The bottom line is the people of Louisiana have worked really hard since this public health emergency was first announced in order to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Edwards said during his Monday news conference. “And I am proud and I want to thank the people of Louisiana for doing that. They committed to and complied with the stay at home order. And had they not, we would not have seen the progress we have been able to see.” Under the new guidance from the state fire marshal, Department of Health and Governor’s Office, attendance will be limited to 25 percent of a worship center’s seating capacity. Pastors and other church staff will be required to wear face masks or cloth covering, and enforce social distancing. Other businesses that now can open, with the same maximum occupancy requirements, … [Read more...]

Retired missionary Glad Martin, Thailand prison ministry pioneer, dies

May 11, 2020

By Erich Bridges RICHMOND, Va. - Retired Southern Baptist missionary Gladys (“Glad”) Martin, a farmer’s daughter from Louisiana bayou country who helped lead thousands of prison inmates and students to Christ during more than 30 years in Thailand, died May 8 following a stroke. She was 81. Alongside her husband and missionary partner, Jack, she pioneered ministry to Thai prisoners, perhaps the most hated and rejected members of society in the overwhelmingly Buddhist nation. The Martins’ determination to give inmates hope -- and the message of a God of second chances -- eventually won the respect and cooperation of national prison authorities and the admiration of Thailand’s royal family. Jack, an outgoing visionary and passionate soul winner, was the face of the prison ministry and the bustling Baptist Student Center in Bangkok, which trains more than 10,000 Thai professionals and college students each year in English and the Gospel. But as he cheerfully acknowledged in later years, the better-organized Glad often was the brains. They made an ideal team. “Dad gets a lot of the credit for what Mom actually did,” recalled their youngest son, Craig, who watched them in action before going on to his own media ministry … [Read more...]

Louisiana Baptist entities share how God is providing during crisis

May 8, 2020

By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM)–Via Dropbox and video messages Louisiana Baptist Convention entity heads delivered their respective reports to the Executive Board, May 5. LOUISIANA COLLEGE Louisiana College President Rick Brewer told board members that God is working despite challenges presented by the novel coronavirus pandemic. He shared that the school has received more than $15,000 toward production of a 3D printer to make frames for the protective face shields that are in demand by hospitals and clinics. Natalie Maxey, an assistant professor of engineering at Louisiana College, has used an on-campus lab to make the shields since March 25. “Almost every minute of almost every hour she is making essential items that we are sending to places like Lafayette, places here in central Louisiana, places around our state who need this protective equipment and who will continue to need it,” Brewer said. Another innovation has been to shift all instruction online, March 30, to facilitate remote learning – a move made possible by a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Brewer said the school received the grant in 2019, and saved Louisiana College more than $100,000 in … [Read more...]

Acteens still active in ministry during COVID-19 crisis

May 8, 2020

By Message Staff PINEVILLE, La. (LBM) – The Acteens at First Baptist Church in Pineville were moved by the growing number of needs in their community arising from the lockdown due to the novel coronavirus; and, overcoming the obstacle of social distancing formulated and implemented a creative plan to share Christ's love with 250 local residents. The group of 16 seventh to twelfth grade girls made and mailed cards to church staff, Sunday school leaders and homebound single and senior adults, and they also crafted uplifting signs that were placed on the windows of each of the 100 residents of the Lexington House Care Center in Alexandria. Adrienne Martin, leader of the FBCP Acteens group, said her girls have lived out the mission of this ministry. “I’m so proud of the girls for their willingness to bring God’s message of hope and love during this difficult time,” Martin told the Baptist Message. Jess Archer, children/youth missions strategist for Louisiana Baptists, said she is encouraged by Acteens in the state who are serving their community. “Being that we are living in unprecedented times through self-quarantine, Acteens have stepped up to the plate to reach others in Jesus’s name,” Archer said. “I’m delighted … [Read more...]

Horn shares good news with LBC Executive Board

May 6, 2020

By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – Steve Horn, on the heels of the one-year anniversary of his election as Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Director, said during the first-ever virtual meeting of the Executive Board that God is moving throughout the state amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. “Words don’t come easy right now for any of us,” Horn told 64 board members logged in to computers around the state during the May 5 meeting. “If you’re like me, you are riding a rollercoaster of emotions. Depending on the hour, I feel devastated, paralyzed, hopeful, angry, fearful, heartbroken, overwhelmed, joyful, nothing at all ... repeat. This is a challenging time when nothing feels normal. “The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us—our own families, our churches, our ministries, our camps, our Bible schools, our Convention,” he continued. “It is affecting finances, health and access to health care, and even isolating us from friends and loved ones. “Even in the uncertainty, I know that God is God, and He is up to something.” Horn shared with board members while business as usual has changed since Gov. John Bel Edwards issued his first coronavirus-related proclamation March 13, the … [Read more...]

Rolling Hills reopens thrift stores

May 6, 2020

By Message Staff RUSTON, La. (LBM) – Rolling Hills Ministries has reopened its thrift stores for the first time since Gov. John Bel Edwards ordered non-essential businesses to close in the state. On Monday morning the ministry’s locations in Arcadia, Bossier City, Monroe and Ruston welcomed customers who had been unable to shop at any of the shops since March 15. No more than 10 customers at one time were allowed in the store, and each person could shop for up to 30 minutes while adhering to the social distance guideline of six feet of separation as they moved along the aisles and waited in line to check out. Everyone was encouraged to wear a mask. “We are giving people confidence they can buy low cost clothing and household items in a safe environment by following state guidelines,” Rolling Hills Director of Ministries John Cowling told the Baptist Message. “We are all blessed to be working at Rolling Hills again.”   … [Read more...]

Camps take COVID-19 threat, seriously, and are ready to host

May 6, 2020

By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – Louisiana Baptist camps are facing an uncertain summer season but their ministry leaders are confident God will provide. Tall Timbers Baptist Conference Center in Woodworth has not hosted any groups since Governor John Bel Edwards issued a stay at home order March 22 that limited gatherings to no more than 10 people. Camp Director Josh Bumgardner told the Baptist Message the only summer camp that has been affected so far is the Champion’s Camp. Because many of the special needs campers have compromised immune systems, Louisiana Baptist Convention children’s ministry strategist David Anderson made the decision to move that camp date from June to Sept. 18-20. “All of us want to have summer camps if conditions are safe to do so,” Bumgardner said. “Summer camps have a huge impact on the spiritual lives of children and youth. We see new Christians born each summer and so many more whose faith matures here. The decision to go ahead or cancel a camp will be made three weeks prior. "If it is safe enough to have a week of camp at that point, we absolutely want to host it,"he said. But he emphasized his commitment to set a good example on behalf of Louisiana … [Read more...]

State guidance: Conducting memorial services during COVID-19 crisis

May 5, 2020

By the Office of the Louisiana Department of Justice BATON ROUGE, La. (LDOJ)--This guidance is designed to assist those handling memorial services during the COVID-19 emergency in light of Proclamation 38 JBE 2020 issued on March 31, 2020. If possible, conduct direct burial or cremation, with a memorial service for the deceased to follow after the COVID-19 risks have abated. It is crucial for interments or cremations to continue during this emergency because the remains cannot continue to take up much-needed storage space while families wait for the ability to conduct a full commemoration service. Under Louisiana law (la. R.S. 8:651), burials or cremations must occur “within a reasonable time” after death. A reasonable time during this emergency, pursuant to CDC guidance, is three (3) days. If this short delay is impractical, final disposition may occur later, but must occur within 10 days if the remains have been properly embalmed or refrigerated. If embalming or refrigeration has not occurred, Louisiana law mandates burial or cremation within 30 hours (La. R.S. 37:848(D)). If some memorial must be held during the stay-at-home and social distancing periods, then: Funeral services (at the place of worship or … [Read more...]
