Willoughby, Managing Editor ROBERT – Crossgate Baptist Church has a long-term vision to plant 10 cowboy churches. They’re now on number three and two more are already in the early stages. The vision has resulted in God calling out men from the church to lead as pastors or lay preachers, and in spreading the gospel far beyond the city limits of Robert, located between Baton Rouge and Covington. Leaders are looking for country folks – “people in the horse culture” – who want to be part of a church plant in Zachary, Washington Parish and the McComb, Miss./Kentwood, La., areas. “We’re a non-traditional Southern Baptist church,” said Louis Husser, pastor since 1992 of the church where about 150 people participate in Sunday morning worship. Hunter, Regional ReporterZACHARY - First Baptist Church was packed to overflowing on Aug. 5, when SBC President Fred Luter, Jr., senior pastor of Louisiana’s largest SBC church, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church of New Orleans, preached the final service of the second annual “Mondays for the Master” summer sermon series hosted by Reggie Bridges.   Bridges, who serves as the pastor of First Zachary, said that around 700 attended the  service, including the entire Zachary High School football team and the cheerleaders. The praise and worship choir from Franklin Avenue Baptist’s Baton Rouge campus, that meets at Florida Boulevard Baptist, opened the service. Several dozen members of that church also got to greet their pastor they rarely see living far from New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina scattered that flock. Before the service began, when he preached on the topic, “In the Master’s Hands,” based on Jeremiah 18:1-6, he graciously agreed to a brief interview. Ronnie Floyd, senior pastor of Cross Church in northwest Arkansas, announced the 24-hour event on Aug. 14. “On behalf of our invitation team, I am inviting you to join us in a prayer gathering of senior pastors from all sizes of churches across America, for one purpose: praying together for revival and awakening!” Floyd said in a written statement. “We will focus on praying for pastors, local churches and our nation to experience a mighty move of God that will be a catalyst for revival and awakening.” The team of pastors has committed to attend the event in its entirety, Floyd said. “This is not a ‘come and go’ event or a place to ‘come and be seen,’” Floyd said, “nor is it a denominational or political meeting. It is a serious spiritual experience of prayer with pastors nationally. By Mark H. Hunter, Regional Reporter BATON ROUGE – Fishing may be a part of life in Louisiana but it is not in China. So when Arthur Ruan, an LSU grad student, caught his first fish, he shouted and jumped around like a little kid. Ruan was one of two dozen international students from half a dozen countries who got to experience America beyond the campus during a recent evening fishing trip sponsored by the LSU BCM to a private lake owned by a Baptist family, the Harrisons. “The first fish of my life!” the tall, lanky Chinese man declared in pretty good English, as he hoisted the flopping bream for all to see. By Tobin Perry, NAMB Communications NEW ORLEANS – When Page Brooks first visited New Orleans on a 1997 mission trip, the city didn’t impress him. “It was dirty. It was nasty. People talked funny, and they were strange,” said Brooks, who felt called to pastor and was considering seminary options. “I liked the food. But the city was sinful, and I didn’t like the French Quarter. I got all of those impressions Christians get of New Orleans on the first visit.” In fact, when his collegiate pastor suggested Brooks take a look at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, he almost laughed. “But through providential circumstances from the Lord, He eventually led me back down here [to study at the seminary],” Brooks said. “For me and my family, God just broke our hearts for the city of New Orleans. It’s a city we love. We don’t want to live any place else. I want to live here and die here. By Rachel Ortego, Regional Reporter LOUISIANA – In 2011 the tables were turned on four Toledo Bend fishermen when they became fishers of men as well as of fish. Because of a Toledo Bend Resort Ministry children’s project taking place during a fishing tournament, the four men made professions of faith and a chain of events began that is having kingdom-sized results. Mary Gore, director of Toledo Bend Resort Ministry in Sabine Parish, said she was not surprised. As far as she is concerned, she explained, Jesus operated the first resort ministry. Gore remains emphatic about the impact resort ministries have in drawing people to Christ. The world-famous annual B.A.S.S.
