NAMB offers $15 million in church plant loans

March 29, 2015

By Mickey Noah, Baptist Press ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) – As part of its expanding emphasis on church planting, the North American Mission Board is dedicating up to $15 million for financing new church plants across North America. The new church plant loan initiative was approved by NAMB’s board of trustees at their regular meeting on May 11. The board’s church finance ministry will continue to make loans to established, existing churches. “We are serious about planting new churches and giving church planters all the tools and resources they need to be successful,” NAMB President Kevin Ezell said. “The new church plant loan program, recently approved by the trustees, is just another example of that.” NAMB and its predecessor, the Home Mission Board, have been making loans to established churches since 1900. But this marks the first time NAMB has utilized its church loan resources specifically for creating new loan products for church plants, said Karl Dietz, director of church finance ministry for NAMB in Alpharetta, Ga. Interest income from the loans flows directly back to North American missions. As of April 30, Dietz said NAMB had $135 million representing 428 outstanding church loans on its books. Dietz, whose team consults … [Read more...]

Youth statewide invited to End-of-Summer event

March 29, 2015

By Staff, Baptist Message   JONESBORO – After last summer’s successful “first-ever” Youth Explosion, the second-annual no-cost event has been set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7-10 at the Jonesboro High School gymnasium. Teens across the state are invited.   Last year, about 2,800 teens and their leaders participated in the four-night, high-energy event.   “We wanted to be able to provide a pretty huge event that would bring our teenagers back right before school starts,” said Clay Smith, youth minister at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. The “we” in his statement includes seven or eight youth ministers from three associations, Smith explained.   “We want churched kids to bring lost kids, and to fire up the Christians to share Christ with their classmates and friends,” Smith said. “We got so much positive feedback and response last year that we knew no doubt we would have to do this again. ...   “This year we have a total different line-up,” Smith said.   Ed Newton, a youth evangelist from Tennessee has been tapped as each night’s main speaker. Newton was guest speaker last November at the Youth Evangelism Conference and in March at the Pre-teen Invasion. Read more about … [Read more...]

Shoes for Souls

March 29, 2015

[img_assist|nid=7492|title=Shoes for souls|desc=The youth of Faith Baptist Church in Tioga recently led the way in planning and promoting an effort to raise dozens and dozens of pairs of shoes for children in overseas orphanages. “Foot protection is a key issue in preventing injury and disease in developing countries and often these shoes are in short supply,” says Faith Tioga Pastor Clark Palmer. The shoes were taken to the Dallas headquarters of Buckner Benevolences, a well-known ministry organization. Mission teams from other churches will travel to developing nations to distribute the shoes in the near future. “By participation in efforts such as these we educate ourselves about the depth of need in other parts of the world,” Palmer says. “While no person or church can address every need, we can add to what we are already doing through the Cooperative Program and our IMB/NAMB/Georgia Barnette giving, and make a difference in yet another area.”|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427] … [Read more...]

IMB, NAMB partnership to transcend national and geographic borders

March 29, 2015

By Erich Bridges, IMB Communications   RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – Recently planted seeds of a new partnership between Southern Baptists’ two mission boards are already beginning to sprout.   Previously, the International Mission Board and North American Mission Board carefully observed the geographical separation between their two ministry assignments.[img_assist|nid=7495|title=IMB, NAMB Partnership|desc=A Meskhetian Turkish immigrant family arrives in the United States in this 2006 file photo. A ministry assignment change approved by Southern Baptist Convention messengers this year enables the International Mission Board to help the North American Mission Board in assisting churches to reach unreached and underserved people groups within the United States and Canada. The excitement evidenced by the Turkish family exemplifies the hopes of many immigrants, refugees and other internationals coming to North America from around the globe. What they need most, besides friends, is the Gospel. National borders no longer define the task of missions in a globalized world marked by the rapid migrations of people groups.|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427]   But national borders no longer define the task of … [Read more...]

Not this time: What a ‘Relief’ – As rivers subside, state DR teams stand down

March 29, 2015

By Karen L. Willoughby, Managing Editor   [img_assist|nid=7356|title=Chainsaw Crews|desc=While Louisiana’s Disaster Relief Teams have not had to deal with the projected castrophic flooding forecasted, they were prepared for the worst. Even though, they did not have to turn out in force here, they have responded to the needs of Mississippi and Alabama hit hard by deadly tornadoes and spring storms, as well as needs in Louisiana.|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=491]MISSISSIPPI RIVERBANKS – As an event, it didn’t happen.   But Louisiana’s 4,300-plus trained Disaster Relief volunteers and its 74 DR units – feeding, shower/laundry, chain saw, mud-out, child care trailers – were ready, just in case Mississippi River floodwaters overtopped or breached levees anywhere from Lake Providence to the Gulf of Mexico.   “It’s frustrating sometimes, but that’s the nature of the beast,” said Gibbie McMillan, director of Disaster Relief and men’s ministries for the Louisiana Baptist Convention. “All the preparatory work we did – but it was a blessing we didn’t need them.   “However, if we had had a need for them, they would have been there,” McMillan continued. “It’s a good time to be a Southern … [Read more...]

Hispanic church blesses Metairie

March 29, 2015

By Rayna Pittman, Special to the Message   [img_assist|nid=7361|title=Spreading the Word|desc=Pastor Gonzalo Rodriguez, shown delivering his sermon, has seen the congregation of Good Shepherd Baptist Church grow to 600 strong. It is projected to jump to 1,000 by year’s end.|link=none|align=left|width=91|height=100]METAIRIE – “Dios le bendiga” fills the air as members of Good Shepherd Baptist Hispanic Church head to their unofficially assigned pews on Sunday mornings.   As they bless one another in the name of God and prepare their hearts for worship, the outside world takes a back seat. But in a Hispanic congregation such as this one, certain issues preoccupy the minds of worshippers and even make their way into the corporate prayer time. As Pastor Gonzalo Rodriguez delivers the sermon, he is mindful that someone in his audience may be an undocumented resident who lives with the fear of deportation.   “We all are welcome here before God’s throne,” Rodriguez said. “He loves us all equally.”   While the Senate works to reintroduce the DREAM Act, which would give undocumented young people who plan to attend college or join the military a path to legal status, buried beneath the political … [Read more...]

The race of faith: a marathon, not a sprint

When I ran cross country, our training involved running Monday through Friday and, occasionally, optional Saturday runs. We did “easy” days, long-distance days, sprint days (the worst), and more, all to make sure that we were in the best shape possible for our 5k race — a little over three miles — which occurred … Read More
