People list reasons for leaving church

March 26, 2015

The latest findings from the LifeWay Research area of LifeWay Christian Resources give the top 10 reasons adults switch churches. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The latest findings from the LifeWay Research area of LifeWay Christian Resources give the top 10 reasons adults switch churches. This study builds on LifeWay Research’s 2006 study of the formerly churched, which explored the reasons adults stop going to church. The current findings explain why people change churches and how these situations differ from those in which the individual does not resume church attendance at all. Church switchers are defined as Protestant Americans who have attended more than one church regularly as an adult. “There are two types of people who slip out through the back door of the church,” said Scott McConnell, associate director of LifeWay Research. “One group is probably leaving church permanently, and the other group is going to find a new church.” To understand why adults choose to change churches, 415 “non-mover” church switchers – who changed churches for reasons other than changes to their residential location – were surveyed in December 2006. The study results indicate that overall, those who change churches for … [Read more...]

Page says segment is one-sided

Much is being done and more can be done to protect children from sexual predators within Southern Baptist churches, but an ABC News “20/20” segment on the issue April 13 amounted to “yellow journalism,” SBC President Frank Page says. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) – Much is being done and more can be done to protect children from sexual predators within Southern Baptist churches, but an ABC News “20/20” segment on the issue April 13 amounted to “yellow journalism,” SBC President Frank Page says. The segment focused on child sexual predators within Protestant churches, focusing on 10-20 occurrences within Southern Baptists’ 40,000 churches. In introducing the 16-minute segment, 20/20’s Elizabeth Vargas said, “What surprised us ... is how little is being done to stop it.” ABC’s Jim Avila used the term “preacher predators.” The segment spotlighted a youth pastor who sexually abused minors at a church in Kentucky, and then moved on to a Missouri church and did the same. Avila interviewed Page for roughly two hours recently, but in the end used just a few seconds of the interview, and Page said, left out what the denomination is doing to address the problem. “Much is being done right now and much is being done on the … [Read more...]

Page addresses the issue in recent column

Several days ago, I was interviewed by ABC’s “20/20” news for an upcoming program tentatively titled, “Preacher Predators.” At the request of several, I agreed to this invitation so as to provide some kind of balance to a program which may well be overwhelmingly negative. TAYLORS, S.C. (BP) – Several days ago, I was interviewed by ABC’s “20/20” news for an upcoming program tentatively titled, “Preacher Predators.” At the request of several, I agreed to this invitation so as to provide some kind of balance to a program which may well be overwhelmingly negative. There has been a great deal of attention given to this subject in recent days. As I said to the reporter, we are willing and able to discuss this issue because even one instance of sexual abuse by a minister is too much. While I do not believe the problem is systemic and large-scale, there have been several reported cases of abuse by trusted members of staff in our churches. Let me help set a few matters clear for you. Some persons have accused Southern Baptists of ignoring the issue and hiding behind our polity. Let me clearly state that we believe in the autonomy of the local church as a biblical mandate. We are not hiding behind anything, except the … [Read more...]

Response to ABC 20/20 segment on sexual predators in ministry

March 26, 2015

Unfortunately, the “20/20” report last Friday had the effect of misleading at least some of its viewers to believe that the Southern Baptist Convention somehow condones, hides or denies sexual offenses committed by ministers in SBC-affiliated churches. The Convention does none of those things. Quite the contrary. D. August Boto is general counsel and vice president for convention policy with the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) – Unfortunately, the “20/20” report last Friday had the effect of misleading at least some of its viewers to believe that the Southern Baptist Convention somehow condones, hides or denies sexual offenses committed by ministers in SBC-affiliated churches. The Convention does none of those things. Quite the contrary. The report included accurate assertions, certainly. For instance, it is true that Southern Baptist ministers have been charged and/or convicted of sexually abusing children. It is true that in some of those instances, abuse had occurred earlier at churches where those men had been previously employed. It is apparently true that at least in one case a church previously employing a sexual predator and the church employing the offender at … [Read more...]

Welch thanks, prays with wounded troops

SAN ANTONIO (BP) – Flown by medi-vac aircraft from Southeast Asia, the severely wounded soldier stared up from his cot at the Texas blue sky as medics hustled him intoBrookeArmyMedicalCenter in San Antonio. Forty-one years ago, Bobby Welch left Vietnam with a gaping hole in his chest from an enemy bullet and eventually arrived at BAMC flat on his back. Forty-one years later, he walked upright into that hospital -- this time with an open heart. “Hi, I’m Bobby Welch, and I’m a graduate from this place,” the decorated veteran said with outstretched hand toward dozens of soldiers at BAMC. With a broad smile on his face and occasional tears in his eyes, Welch told the soldiers, “Thank you. God bless you. We’re proud of you.” Later in each conversation he’d ask, “May I pray with you?” Welch, newly named strategist for global evangelical relations with the SBC Executive Committee, visited BAMC as part of his six-week trek across Texas to raise awareness among Southern Baptists in Texas about the upcoming Crossover San … [Read more...]

Some took the good weather as a sign of God’s blessing.       PINEVILLE – Early morning clouds gave way to dappled sunlight streaming through this city’s namesake tall trees about 11 a.m. Feb. 22. Some took the good weather as a sign of God’s blessing.   Others saw God’s hand in a series of events over the last several months that resulted in the reason about 150 people gathered on ground strewn with pine straw and last fall’s leaves. The mayors of Pine-ville and Ball were on hand, as were several city councilmen, a candidate for sheriff, and members of three trustee boards: Christian Oasis, Donahue Family Church and Cenla Christian Academy.   The entire student body of what is known as "CCA – home of the Lions" also was on hand as various dignitaries turned dirt with shovels painted gold for the occasion: groundbreaking for what could be a $50 million or more campus for the school.   "This is the future of our kids," said Keith Perkins, a member of Donahue Family watching the activity. "This is the future of our country."   The short version of the story is that Christian Oasis ministry … [Read more...]

Grace Ministries addresses Lake Charles community needs

Gerri Captain does whatever it takes to serve the young mothers and their children living in poverty here. LAKE CHARLES – Gerri Captain does whatever it takes to serve the young mothers and their children living in poverty here.   Director of Grace Ministries in Lake Charles, an outreach ministry of the Carey Baptist Association, Captain is instrumental in providing many services for local families, including a children’s learning center, a youth outreach center, a women’s ministry and a women’s and children’s clothing boutique. Over the years, "Whatever it takes" has become her motto.   "We don’t have a warehouse with furniture, but if I get a family who needs furniture, I get on the phone until I find some," Captain explained.   Sponsored primarily by the association and its churches, the ministry began in April 2001. The Louisiana Baptist Convention also contributes a stipend to Grace Ministries.   The ministry provides tutoring at its children’s learning center for children up to 12 years old. If a child cannot receive tutoring at the center, then Captain arranges for the tutoring to take place elsewhere.   "Whatever works for the tutor and the student," said Captain, who busses children to and from the learning … [Read more...]

Page challenges SBC

(BP) – Frank Page, in his second address to Executive Committee members as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, spoke of an "irrecoverable moment" in which believers must repent of their self-sufficiency and unite in the task of taking the land for Christ just as the Israelites took the Promised Land despite the challenges.   "I believe that we are at what I would call a crossroads opportunity, a time that some might call even an irrecoverable moment," Page said Feb. 19 in Nashville, Tenn.   Page referred to a story told by Billy Graham in which John F. Kennedy, before he was president, asked the evangelist if he believed in the second coming of Jesus. When Graham said he did, Kennedy asked him to tell him about it.   "And Billy Graham said he told him about why Jesus came the first time and what the Bible said about His coming the second time," Page said. "He listened with such attention, and as they pulled up to the house he said, ‘Does my church teach that?’ He said, ‘Well, they believe it in their creeds and in their confessions but … [Read more...]
