Lottie Moon offering receives record $154 million

April 1, 2015

RICHMOND, Va. – Southern Baptists gave an unprecedented $154 million to the 2013 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, breaking the record for the largest total in the offering’s 125-year history. The 2013 offering, finalized June 5, reached $154,057,852.36. The total represents an increase of nearly $4.8 million over 2012, or 3.2 percent. It tops the previous record, $150.4 million in 2007, by more than $3.6 million, and marks the fourth increase since 2008. “This gives us an opportunity to reflect on the incredible generosity of Southern Baptists over many years,” said IMB President Tom Elliff on behalf of the missionaries. “The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering represents well over half of our budget each year, so those who give sacrificially and out of concern for the lost can be assured that an enormous portion of all that happens overseas can be directly tied to their support. “It’s estimated that close to 1 billion people living now are very likely to go through life without ever hearing the Gospel in such a fashion that they can understand it and respond to it in faith,” Elliff said. “Our missionaries are ‘chasers after darkness.’ We’re looking for those dark corners of the world where the light of the … [Read more...]

“Do you know His name?” Fred Luter asks

April 1, 2015

“Jesus saves. So come on, Southern Baptists, we can no longer be at ease in Zion while people all around us are dying and going to hell. Therefore, we must repent. Therefore, we must have remorse and do what Israel did in Psalm 80.” said Fred Luter, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, during the President’s Sermon to more than 5,000 messengers June 10 at the Baltimore Convention Center. “... In the name of Jesus we have the victory.” BALTIMORE (BP) -- The Gospel found only in the name of Jesus will change an America that has blown it with God and is quickly becoming more pagan than Christian, Southern Baptist Convention President Fred Luter told messengers on the eve of his last day in office. Luter drew enthusiastic, soulful responses from worshipers at an evening revival service June 10 during the SBC annual meeting in Baltimore as he preached from Psalm 80:18-19, the meeting's official theme Scripture calling for "Restoration and Revival through Prayer." "As your president for the past two years, my heart's desire has been that God would make us one and that God would send revival and renewal through the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention," Luter said. "Brothers and sisters, the only way that will … [Read more...]

Cooperative Program, other Southern Baptist ‘family’ matters discussed in Baltimore

April 1, 2015

by Joni B. Hannigan, Baptist Press BALTIMORE (BP) -- A three-day discussion among Southern Baptists became a focal point of the exhibit area of the SBC annual meeting in Baltimore as a procession of diverse, articulate Baptists conversed about core values. The dialogue at the Cooperative Program exhibit took place from casual chairs on a simple platform in a high-tech production area that projected the discussion on a massive two-sided high-definition screen overhead and streamed it on the Internet. Nearly 125 different speakers addressed such topics as Southern Baptists' hallmarks of cooperation, international missions, church planting and theological education as well as matters related to ethnic diversity, social justice and sexuality. C. Ashley Clayton, the SBC Executive Committee's vice president for Cooperative Program and stewardship development, said the June 9-11 Cooperative Program hub evolved in response to the desire to facilitate important conversations amicably without controlling the outcome. Like Southern Baptists themselves, the speakers were from every area of the country -- as well as Cuba. Many were young leaders interspersed among bivocational and mega-church pastors, church planters, seminary presidents … [Read more...]

SBC messengers adopt updated qualifications

April 1, 2015

Submitted by philip on Fri, 06/13/2014 - 12:04 Southern Baptist Convention messengers adopted nine resolutions during the two-day SBC annual meeting at the Baltimore Convention Center and elected Ronnie Floyd as their new president. By Shawn Hendricks, Baptist Press BALTIMORE (BP) -- An update to the SBC constitution regarding qualifications for churches to send messengers to the annual meeting was adopted during the Executive Committee's report to the convention June 11 in Baltimore. Describing the recommendation as "small church friendly," EC chairman Ernest Easley said the proposal to revise Article III is a response to a motion from last year's annual meeting in Houston that requested updating messenger qualifications. It was the 16th motion in the past 35 years to call for a reevaluation of Article III. Messengers adopted the recommendation without debate or questions from the floor. In order to officially revise Article III, the recommendation will need to be approved by messengers a second time during the 2015 annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio. "The Executive Committee floated the recommendation out across the convention the last several months in order to build consensus which has really proved beneficial in … [Read more...]
