Louisiana Baptists among state’s longest married couples

(LBM) – Three Louisiana Baptist couples are among the runners-up for the distinction of longest-married couples in the state, released by the Louisiana Family Forum on Valentine's Day: Burl and Mary Clark, members of East Jena Baptist Church; William and Barbara Patterson, members of Summer Grove Baptist Church, Shreveport; and Bill and Hazel Edmonson, members of Calvary Baptist Church, Merryville. Louisiana Family Forum is a faith-based think tank that advocates for pro-family, pro-life, First Amendment and limited government public policies. Based on submissions LFF received, Ira and Margery Milan of New Orleans were named the longest married couple (82 years). The Benham Brothers named keynote speakers for Dr. Maggie Martin Marketplace Leadership Summit

(LCU News) = Former professional baseball players David and Jason Benham will be the speakers for the 2024 Dr. Maggie Martin Marketplace Leadership Summit, scheduled for April 25. The Benham Brothers are nationally acclaimed Christian entrepreneurs and best-selling authors who have started dozens of businesses and hosted a reality show on HGTV. According to their website, the show was canceled when activists pressured the network to fire them over their commitment to their Christian faith. Sunday storms produce high winds, hail in parts of state

By Baptist Message staff SHREVEPORT, La. (LBM) – A line of storms produced high winds and hail in parts of the state, Feb. 11. The National Weather Service office in Shreveport received numerous reports of hail, including two inches near Cross Lake in Caddo Parish,  golf-ball sized hail six miles east of Benton. Further, south ( in the southeast corner state) the area was pummeled by 1.5 inches in Prairieville, 1.25 inches in Alexandria and one inch near Franklinton. There were also reports of pea-sized hail south of Fort Johnson in Leesville, Leander, Pickering, Sieper, Gardner, Hineston, Alexandria, Pineville, Trout, and Jonesville. Additionally, wind gusts of 62 mph was recorded a mile east-southeast of Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City and  59 mph at Shreveport Regional Airport. In southeast Louisiana gusts were 60 mph at South Lafourche Airport in Galliano and 40 mph in Livingston. The NWS office also received reports of a couple of down trees near Girard and multiple trees and downed power lines near west of Springfield. Louisiana Baptist churches ‘shine’ Christ’s light to special needs guests

By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer BENTON, La. (LBM) – Tim Tebow helped give hundreds of special needs individuals in Louisiana Baptist churches the red carpet treatment Friday, Feb. 9. Dressed in their formal attire, these special guests enjoyed a variety of activities to make them feel like kings and queens in God’s eyes at the tenth annual Night to Shine prom. Four Louisiana Baptist churches were among the 726 churches in 50 states and on six continents that hosted the event, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The former Heisman Trophy and NFL quarterback started the event for individuals who have special needs. From the beginning, the evening was magical for the guests, who were transported by limousine, trolley or classic car to a red carpet. Once there, they were greeted by an enthusiastic group of volunteers armed with cameras and cheers from the crowd. Guests received the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining areas, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, karaoke, prom favors and a dance floor. ‘Experiencing God’ author Henry Blackaby dies

February 10, 2024

By Baptist Message staff JONESBORO, Ga. (LBM) – Henry Blackaby, author of “Experiencing God”, passed away Feb. 10. Blackaby, who founded Blackaby Ministries International, had battled health issues for some time. He was 88 at the time of his death. “Early this morning, our dad went to be with his Lord,” Richard Blackaby said in a statement on the Blackaby Ministries International Facebook page. “He helped countless people experience God. Now he is experiencing God in ways that surely surpass even his most cherished dreams. We were privileged to have a spiritual giant for a father. Hopefully we will honor mom and dad for the spiritual legacy they faithfully handed down to us. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.” According to his website, Blackaby served in several churches in California before moving to Saskatchewan, Canada, where he led Faith Baptist Church from a struggling congregation of 10 members to one that eventually planted 38 churches. NLBA prayer gathering: Seek God for revival

(LBM) – More than 300 members from 107 churches in the Northwest Louisiana Baptist Association joined together, Feb. 4, to pray to Almighty God during the fellowship’s ninth annual “Call to Prayer,” according to organizers. Hosted by Eastwood Baptist Church, Haughton, the gathering brought together Christians of various ages and ethnicities to pray for law enforcement officers, the persecuted church, missionaries serving around the world, pastors and other church leaders. The event was marked by prayer from the worship center stage, in small groups around the room and by individuals who pleaded with God for revival in their community, state and nation. The evening also included a special message from U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, a member of Cypress Baptist Church, Benton. Students equipped to share the Gospel at CEC

(LBM) – Mark Robinson told students attending the Collegiate Evangelism Conference hosted by Louisiana Christian University, Feb. 2-3, that they are ambassadors for Christ on their respective campuses. “We’re the ambassadors that are carrying the message of reconciliation,” Robinson, Louisiana Baptist collegiate ministry team director, shared during the conference’s opening session inside Guinn Auditorium. “You are an ambassador and should tell people about Jesus. You’ve got the authority and you’ve got the name badge that says you belong to Jesus.” Citing Luke 19:1-10, Robinson told the students that Jesus saw Zacchaeus in the sycamore tree, called him by name, and in the end, Zacchaeus turned to Jesus. He said that just as Jesus took notice of Zacchaeus, He also takes notice of them. “But you may feel in your life, like nobody sees you,” he said. “They don't know what's going on. Life March Central: Here for her

(LBM) – More than 250 Louisiana Life March Central participants braved a steady rain, Feb. 3, as they marched to show their support for all pregnant and parenting woman. Men and women, young and old, from various denominations and ethnicities joined together to make the journey from the Louisiana Christian University campus to Sacred Heart Church in Pineville. Sarah Zagorski, communications director for Louisiana Right to Life, reminded the crowd that while Roe v. Wade (a decision in 1973 that legalized abortion) was overturned in 2022, pro-life supporters must continue the fight for life. She also encouraged the crowd to follow public policy decisions made by the state legislature in its upcoming session that begins in March. “We’re very excited to see the progress we’ve already seen since the reversal of Roe vs. Wade,” she said. “It's important that even though Roe was overturned, we continue stepping up for women because there will always be unplanned pregnancies. DeQuincy High senior awarded LCU’s 2024 Smith Scholarship

By LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) - DeQuincy High School senior Jeri Vige won Louisiana Christian University's Smith Scholarship, Jan. 28. Vige, who plans to major in biology, won over 24 other competitors a scholarship that covers four-year full tuition, room and board. “We are pleased with the significant response received this year, demonstrated by a major increase in the number of Smith Scholarship participants,” said LCU President Rick Brewer. “Parents and students region-wide recognize the value of a Christ-centered education that is relevant, relational and rigorous. We look forward to watching these students flourish at Louisiana Christian University in the years ahead.” Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Cheryl Clark said that even being selected to be part of this competition deserves high accolades. “To participate, each student must have earned 28 or higher on the ACT and submit a portfolio that contains past awards, recognitions, and accomplishments; two letters of recommendation; and an essay explaining the major features of a Christian Liberal Arts education,” she said. Wear red and work out: LCU to promote cardiovascular health in February

By LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) - Louisiana Christian University wants you to wear red on the first Friday in February to kick off a month-long focus on cardiovascular fitness. The American Heart Association recognizes the first Friday in February as “Go Red for Women” Day, as cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of death in women. By promoting it, the AHA believes people will be motivated, educated, and supported in their journey to better health, and lives can be saved. In conjunction with AHA’s national campaign, LCU’s Department of Exercise Science will host twice-weekly workouts for faculty and staff to promote a healthy heart lifestyle. “Our ‘Step Up, CENLA’ program, funded in part by The Rapides Foundation focuses on creating a culture in which physical activity is the norm in our community,” said Sonia Tinsley, chair of LCU's Department of Exercise Science. “More than 30 percent of adults in Louisiana are not physically active.
