Prayers issued for Louisiana Reach Haiti staff members trapped in Port-au-Prince

March 16, 2024

By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer CAP HAITIEN, Haiti (LBM) – Urgent prayers have been issued for the safe return of two Louisiana Reach Haiti Children’s Village staff members who are trapped in Port-au-Prince, the capitol city of a country that has seen recent explosion of gang activity. Ministry President Darrin Badon told the Baptist Message that the staff members were visiting family members when the most recent explosion of violence occurred and have been trapped since. Badon said that the children and other staff at the Children’s Village are safe in Cap Haitien, a city located 85 miles north of Port-au-Prince. However, he said the airport in the city is closed and they are starting to see shortages of food and goods that come from Port-au-Prince. The ministry is a partnership between the Louisiana Baptist Convention, Haiti Baptist Convention, Louisiana Baptist churches and the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home & Family Ministries. “There are no flights or bus service, so the two staff members can’t get out of Port-au-Prince,” Badon said. “This is our biggest prayer request now.  Pray for these two ladies to remain safe, for God to meet their physical needs and for God to find a way to get … [Read more...]

By Elizabeth Clarke, LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) - Jason Mercer, Louisiana Christian University’s coordinator of distance education, has been elected to serve as the post-secondary member at large representative for the 2024-25 academic year for the Louisiana Association of Business Educators. The 2024 annual conference was hosted at LCU’s Granberry Conference Center on March 1 with presenters from Empowered, a support network for educators. Empowered demonstrated how teachers could enhance their instruction by implementing Empowered’s learning strategy: Principles + Markets = Mindset and how to access their library of activities and resources. This year, the members of LABE recognized Mercer’s accomplishments as the coordinator of Distance Education at LCU’s Center for Online Innovation and Development for its partnership with LCU’s Ray and Dorothy Young School of Business, Technology and Design,  awarding him the 2023 Administrator of the Year. “It is a privilege to grow and serve in an organization that has provided me with so many opportunities over the years and to help support the next generation of business educators,” Mercer said. Over the past several years, the COID staff has partnered with the … [Read more...]

The race of faith: a marathon, not a sprint

When I ran cross country, our training involved running Monday through Friday and, occasionally, optional Saturday runs. We did “easy” days, long-distance days, sprint days (the worst), and more, all to make sure that we were in the best shape possible for our 5k race — a little over three miles — which occurred … Read More
