15th NOBTS Defend apologetics conference draws record crowd, honors retiring Robert Stewart

January 18, 2024

By Marilyn Stewart, NOBTS communications NEW ORLEANS (NOBTS) - The 15th annual Defend apologetics conference at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College, Jan. 2-5, welcomed 465 registrants from colleges and churches from 20 states to hear biblical responses to pressing questions from culture. Fifteen plenary speakers and more than 100 breakout sessions addressed topics and provided biblical responses to issues in brain science, quantum physics, modern film, counter-Christian belief systems, evidence for the resurrection, transhumanism, sexuality and culture, and other subjects. Robert Stewart, director and professor of philosophy and theology, pointed to 1 Peter 3:15 in the opening plenary to caution listeners that knowledge and skill in apologetics is good, but not enough. “The degree to which you are effective in evangelism, missions, apologetics, and in ministry in general will in large part be equal to the degree to which you are committed to Jesus Christ, the degree to which you have submitted to the Lordship of Christ,” Stewart said. He added with urgency, “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.” Plenary speakers included Jamie Dew, NOBTS president; David Calhoun, Gonzaga University; … [Read more...]

LCU’s Tinsley thankful for how Lord has guided her path

January 17, 2024

By Elizabeth Clarke, LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) – Sonia Tinsley's life has been one filled with "eating her words." Tinsley said she never would get a Ph.D. after the exhaustion of going to graduate school at night to earn her master’s degree, after teaching school all day. But 20 years ago, she did just that. She also said she swore she never would run a marathon, despite the fact she had been active her entire life. But after she graduated from college, she started running and got hooked. “The Lord opened that door, too,” she said. “I said I’d never do one, and I’ve run three.” The chair of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Louisiana Christian University, Tinsley said she is thankful that the Lord knows best because her plan didn’t include all that she has accomplished in her life. But that’s what “they” say about never saying never. It doesn’t stop what God has in store. Tinsley grew up in Dry Prong and attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, where she played basketball. It was there that she met her husband, Jason, while they were both students. They married in 1995, and Sonia began the life of a basketball coach’s wife. “College coaching is tough … [Read more...]

Landry’s Executive Order addresses illegal immigration in Louisiana

January 17, 2024

BATON ROUGE, La – Governor Jeff Landry signed an Executive Order focused on identifying, quantifying, and mitigating the adverse effects of illegal immigration in Louisiana. This order will require the head of every executive branch entity throughout the state of Louisiana to capture certain data in order to determine the costs the state is having to incur due to those entering our country illegally. “The cost of illegal immigration in this state is falling on the shoulders of hard-working Louisianans. This Executive Order will analyze data to determine the financial burden our citizens are being forced to carry because of those who do not follow the law,” said Governor Jeff Landry. “Louisiana will always welcome those who legally immigrate, but taxpayers cannot continue to foot the bill for individuals who break the law and skip the line.” To view Governor Landry’s Executive Order, please click HERE. … [Read more...]

The race of faith: a marathon, not a sprint

When I ran cross country, our training involved running Monday through Friday and, occasionally, optional Saturday runs. We did “easy” days, long-distance days, sprint days (the worst), and more, all to make sure that we were in the best shape possible for our 5k race — a little over three miles — which occurred … Read More
