Louisiana native and longtime Georgia Baptist pastor Nelson
Price was honored recently with the opening of a facility named in his honor
at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
The 32-room Nelson L. Price Center for Urban Ministries is
to be used in housing short-term missionaries.
Prices family and friends were on hand to celebrate the
dedication of the new dormitory built in response to an expanding MissionLab
ministry, a program that matches the needs and abilities of senior adult, student,
family and youth ministry groups with appropriate mission opportunities in the
New Orleans area.
More than 1,800 youth and 500 senior adults are scheduled to
participate in mission activities this summer and fall through the program,
adding to the 2,000-plus youth and 132 seniors who have participated in the
programs inaugural years.
Before leaving his native state, Price earned his bachelor
of divinity degree (now the master of divinity) with a major in homiletics in
1956 from the seminary.
Price eventually launched a ministry as pastor of the nearly
9,500-member Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., where he served
35 years before retiring.
Through the years, Price remained involved in the seminary,
serving as a trustee for 16 years.
He was vice chair of the presidential search committee that
selected Landrum Leavell as the seminarys seventh president in 1974. Price
also was instrumental in bringing seminarys first off-campus center to
the Atlanta area in 1982.
In addition to the new facility, the seminary has funded an
endowed faculty chair in Prices honor.
The Nelson L. Price Chair of Leadership is the first endowed chair for the
seminarys North Georgia Campus. It will pay the salary for the director
of the seminarys largest extension center. (BP)
