LBC needs Louisiana Christian University

October 20, 2023

By Eddie Wren ZACHARY, La. (LBM) -- I am not a graduate of Louisiana Christian University. But I have served on the board of trustees, two years as president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and then as an elected member for two terms. In that time, I have come to love and support our university, and I believe we need LCU more than ever and that we need to support her like never before. We need LCU because it is a distinctively Christian voice in an increasingly secular society. There are many state universities that can prepare students for the job market. But none of them emphasize the Christian worldview in every discipline the way that LCU does. Unfortunately, when many of our Louisiana Baptist children go to state schools, they sit under professors who scoff at Christianity and even try to kill the faith that parents spent years nurturing in their children. Young people have shared with me about the ridicule they endured in classes because of their faith in Christ. Sadly, I have witnessed more than a few leave for school as active members of the body of Christ only to return from college no longer living the faith they once possessed. Regrettably, research shows that 66 percent of Christian students … [Read more...]

Three ways we can respond to situation in Israel

October 16, 2023

By Steve Horn ALEXANDRIA, La. - On Sept. 29, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan speaking at an event said, “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.” Without debating the accuracy of his assessment, his statement shows us how quickly things can change. David Jeremiah used the phrase, “a bend in the road,” to describe his diagnosis of cancer. I have used the phrase the “curveballs of life.” My own experience teaches me that life can radically change every time the phone rings. Certainly, we are experiencing historical change. To what extent, time will tell. My question for us today is “How are we going to respond? Let me suggest three ways we must respond. We must trust God. We must be people of peace, not panic. Others will be watching us. If we, people who describe ourselves as having peace because we know the Prince of Peace, panic in this moment, what happens to our testimony that we trust God? My favorite verse, as I have shared many times before is Revelations 19:6, “Hallelujah, the Lord, our God, reigns.” This is the exclamation point of Revelation and the exclamation point of history. I do not know what the next day holds, but I know this—whatever happens, the Lord … [Read more...]

Does the SBC need an impossible missions force? (part two)

September 29, 2023

The Southern Baptist Convention is firmly in the grip of decline. No large family of churches in the history of American Christianity to date has been able to break free from that grip and return to growth and fruitfulness. … [Read more...]

They were listening to them

September 7, 2023

By Bill Britt HAUGHTON, La. – Of all people, the Apostle Paul could have legitimately complained about the circumstances that he endured throughout his life. When we look back to the beginning of Paul’s journey as a believer, we see that he received a message from the Lord that illuminated the path he was about to embark on. Luke wrote the account of Paul’s conversion in the book of Acts. Paul had been known as Saul until the time of his encounter with Jesus. We know that Saul had been persecuting the church, and he truly believed that he was doing God a favor. You can read about the amazing life change that brought Saul to become Paul in Acts 9. It is only the Gospel of Jesus Christ that can change the heart of any man or woman. Saul was given a message from God through a man named Ananias. This is that message. Saul would become a great man of God and would preach the Gospel to the Gentiles as well as to the children of Israel. He would preach to both royalty and the common man. However, he would suffer many things for the sake of Jesus (The Lord has never watered down the cost of following him.) Paul heard the command of the Lord and knew it would not be easy. In light of this revelation from the Lord, he set out on … [Read more...]

FIRST PERSON: God was at work in the rescue of a Louisiana family on a Tennessee lake

August 29, 2023

By Laura Holeman Trahan, special to the Baptist Message DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (LBM) -- In the Bible, the Hebrew word “ruach” is translated as wind, breath and spirit, interchangeably. How ever one chooses to interpret it, God was undeniably hovering over our family this past Independence Day holiday in the form of “ruachַ” to guide us safely through a storm. In the hustle of church activities, work, summer sports, camps, trips, and more, summer in this season of life with two adolescent kids is not quite as free and easy as is often advertised. Consequently, when we realized all four of us were free on the same days of July 3 and 4, we decided to relive some of our best family memories of primitive camping on one of the many TVA-owned islands on Douglas Lake. Excited by the possibility of disconnecting from the outside world and connecting with each other, we loaded our four kayaks with camping gear and launched our boats across the street from our house. After paddling a mere 100 feet from shore, the blue sky turned black, and a heavy downpour drenched us for roughly five minutes. We could not communicate in the storm, and my husband and the kids continued to paddle forward while I turned back to the shore. When the rain … [Read more...]

Gus, my personal ‘angel’

August 25, 2023

Often in my life, I have been aware of the Lord’s protection. He has covered me with His wings during storms; He has carried me when I could not walk alone; He has surrounded me during miles of travel; He has strengthened me when I was afraid; and He has comforted me when I was hurting. … [Read more...]

FIRST PERSON: Small churches can be ‘global,’ too

August 22, 2023

By Mike Holloway WEST MONROE, La. (LBM) – Louisiana Baptist congregations get to celebrate being part of some wonderful ministries around the world. By giving through the Cooperative Program, we are part of God’s work around the globe. But sometimes smaller congregations also wish they could do overseas missions “on their own,” too. However, it’s often difficult to do because of modest resources. Still, we learned at Ouachita Baptist Church that even with our moderately sized membership we could make a direct impact to the ends of the earth. Three years ago, we were contacted on Facebook by an interpreter in Zambia who had assisted me during a week of evangelism there nearly two decades earlier. Edward Mulenga was now the pastor of “Word of Truth Ministries,” but the congregation had no building. Still, he simply asked us to partner with his church in prayer. And we did. Through that commitment, God began to move us to help these fellow believers, half a world away. It was a step of faith for several reasons. About 200 worshipers regularly gather each week in our West Monroe facilities. But 2020 was punctuated with COVID stay-at-home mandates. Also, we were engaged in a focused effort to pay off our … [Read more...]

Don’t be afraid to pray for yourself

By Steve Horn ALEXANDRIA, La. - In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, in an otherwise mundane list of genealogy, we get these powerful two verses about an otherwise unknown man named Jabez. This mention is truly a great “pause” over a man named Jabez. The brief mention is about this one thing of prayer—specifically a prayer … Read More
