By Benjamin Clapper Louisiana Right to Life NEW ORLEANS -- Gov. Bobby Jindal's decision to yank Medicaid dollars from Planned Parenthood will be protested today, Aug. 20, at the Governor's Mansion in Baton Rouge, and protesters will be met with the showing of undercover videos of Planned Parenthood officials engaged in the sale of baby parts after abortion, according to several local news sources. Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life, released the following statement today in response to Gov. Bobby Jindal's decision to play the videos on a movie screen on the mansion's front lawn: "Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast and its supporters have ignored the atrocious videos that have shown their own leaders complicit in the sale of baby body parts of unborn babies. Instead of discussing the reality of their abortion business and the sale of baby parts, they sidestep and place the focus on their false claims that access to healthcare will fall apart in Louisiana if Planned Parenthood does not have a Medicaid contract. "The truth is, as Gov. Jindal has stated, there are numerous healthcare providers, both public and private, that offer the services Planned Parenthood offers at its two Louisiana … [Read more...]
Louisiana College’s annual workshop features national notables
By Norm Miller, Louisiana College Communications PINEVILLE (LCNews) - Louisiana College’s annual faculty/staff workshop features nationally known experts in their respective fields, who will lead several plenary, and breakout sessions Aug. 17 and 18. The Aug. 17 sessions include Dr. Peter Beck, associate professor of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University (CSU). Beck’s topic, “Integrating Faith and Learning and Then Some,” posits that Christian colleges “exist to extend the Kingdom of God beyond the church into every area of life.” Beck notes that Christian educators “are called to integrate faith in every area of our lives,” and that includes the relationship between Christ and campus. The director of the Honors Program at CSU, Beck -- whose theological writings have been published broadly -- received the 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award from the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. “Globalizing a Liberal Arts Faculty and Staff and Then Some” is Dr. Carolyn Bishop’s topic. Burl Cain rules out run for governor, for now
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ANGOLA – Burl Cain won’t be joining the list of candidates running for Louisiana governor, at least for now. The warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola announced the news on Wednesday during a meeting of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, ending months of speculation on his status for running in the governor’s race. “I wouldn’t have the money to do it,” Cain said in an article by the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper. “I looked at it. I’m still looking at it. … I’d have to resign my job.” The longest-serving warden of any prison in the U.S. and in the history of Angola itself, Cain had said during the Louisiana Baptist Senior Adult Lunch at Summer Grove Baptist Church in February that he had not yet made a decision whether he would or would not run for the office. Signs in support of his potential candidacy can be found around Louisiana and the Facebook page “We Want Warden Burl Cain La Governor 2015” has garnered nearly 2,000 likes. “It’s important to serve Him and look for His blessing and direction,” Cain said at the time. “When you are not in God’s will, disaster occurs. No answer would mean I didn’t get an answer and I would stay here at Angola Either answer is … [Read more...]
First Baptist Ponchatoula credits God, AED to helping save member’s life
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer PONCHATOULA – First Baptist Church in Ponchatoula is counting their blessings after an automated external defibrillator (AED) the congregation received years ago saved the life of one of its deacons. The incident occurred as parents and teenagers gathered for a lunch and meet-and-greet with the church’s prospective youth minister on Aug. 9. Suddenly, a deacon fell back and burst his head. Byron Willie, a member of the church and the Ponchatoula Fire Department, was just outside the building when he called to the scene. A circle of prayer was formed while Willie performed CPR. David Cranford, pastor of the church, soon arrived with the church’s AED and the deacon was brought back to life. Willie said he is thankful God prevented what could have been a tragic situation. “Everyone is saying y’all saved that man’s life,” Willie said. “I told them God put that man in the right place at the right time with the right people. God took care of everything else.” An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses irregular heartbeats to could lead to cardiac arrest in a patient. When used, the device can help re-establish an effective rhythm in a … [Read more...]

Videos lead Louisiana, two other states to defund Planned Parenthood
By Message Staff BATON ROUGE -- Louisiana is among three states that have eliminated state funding for Planned Parenthood. After Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced the state’s Department of Health and Hospitals was canceling its Medicaid contract with Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast as of Aug. 3, Alabama and New Hampshire followed just a few days later. New Hampshire’s Executive Council made its decision to terminate the state’s contract on Aug. 5 while Alabama ended its Medicaid agreement with Planned Parenthood on Aug. 6. “In recent weeks, it has been shocking to see reports of the alleged activities taking place at Planned Parenthood facilities across the country,” Jindal said in a news release. “Planned Parenthood does not represent the values of the people of Louisiana and shows a fundamental disrespect for human life. It has become clear that this is not an organization that is worthy of receiving public assistance from the state.” The action came after videos surfaced showing Planned Parenthood senior directors and others affiliated with the organization discussing the sale of body parts from aborted children. Jindal then asked for an investigation into the organization. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast … [Read more...]
As crane and construction company prepare for arrival, more volunteers needed to help with building of Georgia Barnette Conference Center
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer WOODWORTH – Volunteers are needed to assist with setting large trusses at the Georgia Barnette Conference Center. A construction company is donating the use of a crane and workers for the project, with a targeted start date of Aug. 24, but additional volunteers are needed to assist those workers. The 8,400-square-foot center on the grounds of Tall Timbers Conference Center in Woodworth will have six small group rooms and a large auditorium that can be arranged for up to 580 participants. Also included will be a state-of-the-art sound system and lighting. With the exception of professional contractors who poured the concrete slab on June 29, construction of the project has been comprised entirely of volunteers. Nearly 50 Kingdom Builders from Louisiana and Texas helped with framing work on July 13. After that, a group from Calvary Baptist Church in Alexandria, two men from Texas and a husband-wife team from Arkansas has volunteered their time. The center is named after Georgia Barnette, the first elected and paid Woman’s Missionary Union executive director/treasurer in Louisiana. Every year Louisiana Baptists collect the Georgia Barnette State Missions … [Read more...]
Warshaw: 101-year old babe in Christ
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ALEXANDRIA – For 24 years, Lou Warshaw prayed her husband would accept Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. After years of refusing to give up on the hope that one day her husband would become a Christian, God answered her prayers last month when 101-year-old George Warshaw made that decision and followed through with believer’s baptism. “That was an experience I never dreamed I would have,” said Lou Warshaw. “I almost had given up. The devil kept telling me it wouldn’t happen but I kept believing God would let it happen. I think I’m still on cloud nine.” His conversion story began on July 24, 1991, when Lou and George Warshaw became husband and wife. The two were of different faiths; Lou a Christian and George a Jewish non-believer. Even so, George attended Calvary Baptist Church in Alexandria most Sundays with Lou, where she was a member. They sat in the same pew every Sunday for wor ship and then attended a Bible study class afterwards. Throughout the years, Lou and other friends never pushed their faith on George, but rather showed him Christian love and prayed that he would come to know Christ. Recently, George was unable to continue attending Calvary or even … [Read more...]
‘All In’ weekend at Celebration Church is reason to celebrate
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer NEW ORLEANS – Ninety-two people went all in one recent Sunday at Celebration Church’s six campuses in the New Orleans area, participating in believer’s baptism. This “All In” weekend at Celebration Church was scheduled to stress the importance of baptism in a Christian’s life. Leading up to the weekend, Celebration Church staff prepared its members by explaining what baptism is about and the important role it plays in the life of a Christian. Fifteen people were originally scheduled for baptism in the middle of the services but many more came forward at the end of the worship services on July 18 and 19 to take this important step. To ensure those coming forward for baptism were confident in their decision, the candidates went to a counseling room, where afterwards they received a shirt and towel before participating in baptism. Through the first week of August, 384 people have been baptized at the church’s campuses. Lead pastor Dennis Watson believes the church can meet its goal of 520 for 2015 by the end of the year. Statewide, Louisiana Baptists have baptized an average of 11,261 per year since 2002. Prior to that, the average was 13,200, before LifeWay changed its method … [Read more...]
Adams, Jurkovich blessed to perform 2 ‘special’ baptisms baptisms
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer Baptisms always are special time in the life of a minister, but they were an extra special memory one recent Sunday for two Louisiana Baptist pastors. Josh Adams, pastor of Pisgah Baptist in Forest Hill, and Brad Jurkovich, pastor of First Bossier, not only baptized a higher than average number but each baptized one of their own children. Adams baptized his son Jace on June 14 while Jurkovich baptized his daughter Catherine on July 19. “There’s no greater feeling in the world for a pastor to be in the baptismal waters baptizing others,” Adams said. “But to baptize your own son is emotional and so rewarding for everything you’ve been through.” Jurkovich echoed the thought. “My daughter had gone to kids camp and told me that she got it more now than ever and was ready,” Jurkovich said. “As a dad and pastor, it’s a wonderful moment to share with your church family. For her it was cool to have all of her fifth grader friends there cheering for her.” Embracing baptisms Both congregations have embraced baptisms in 2015. For the past three years, Pisgah Baptist has averaged 10 baptisms. But this year, this congregation that averages 70 on a Sunday morning has baptized 12 … [Read more...]
