Leader calls for all-out, heroic efforts on behalf of families

March 23, 2015

Southern Baptists might have come to the table late, but they are pulling out all the stops to tend to the nation’s families, which are dying at a rate of 3,571 marriages a day, Tom Elliff said. Southern Baptists might have come to the table late, but they are pulling out all the stops to tend to the nation’s families, which are dying at a rate of 3,571 marriages a day, Tom Elliff said. "It’s terribly late; it’s tragically late," said Elliff, chair of the Southern Baptist Convention Council on Family Life. "I see the families in our convention, in our nation not as getting sick, but I see them as in the intensive care ward in need of immediate attention, or they die. "The answer to that is we must pull out the stops and be heroic in our efforts to do everything we can do to salvage the family." The 16-million-member convention seemingly has been caught unawares by a culture that has changed "at the speed of light," Elliff acknowledged. The result is what was considered obscene a year ago is now accepted on television, he said. In the same way, divorce statistics have skyrocketed. Now, leaders are "scrambling constantly" to respond to the crisis they finally have begun to understand, Elliff said. "We should … [Read more...]

Should seminaries have their own special offering?

March 23, 2015

Southern Baptists are one generation away from a situation in which graduating seminary students cannot go to the mission field or pastor small churches, Paige Patterson recently warned. Southern Baptists are one generation away from a situation in which graduating seminary students cannot go to the mission field or pastor small churches, Paige Patterson recently warned.   The reason the young ministers will not be able to pursue their callings is indebtedness, said Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.   "No mission-sending agency will appoint any student from your school who has existing indebtedness," Patterson recently told Southwestern trustees. "The average Southern Baptist church has less than 200 people in Sunday School. If students graduate with a large amount of debt, they will not be able to make enough money to climb out of debt ... and pastor those churches."   Patterson said students are paying four to five times as much as they used to in tuition and working more to pay for their education. Thus, they cannot take as many hours, which alters their fulltime status and affects the amount of Cooperative Program funds distributed to seminaries, … [Read more...]

Should seminaries have their own special offering?

March 23, 2015

A special seminary offering being proposed for Southern Baptist Convention seminaries runs counter to a recent report regarding the state and future of denominational finances. A special seminary offering being proposed for Southern Baptist Convention seminaries runs counter to a recent report regarding the state and future of denominational finances.   Just last month, an SBC Funding Study Committee recommended that the entire convention would be better served by educating Southern Baptists about the Cooperative Program and challenging them to follow the biblical model of tithing.   The report pointed to a steady decline in recent years in both individual giving and in the percentage of a church’s offerings passed on to Cooperative Program.   Its seven recommendations included one that said "creating any additional special annual offering be discouraged in favor of making Christian stewardship and the Cooperative Program a top priority in Southern Baptist life over the next several years."   The report found that the proliferation of special offerings weakens the unified approach of funding missions and detracts from the Cooperative Program and the existing mission … [Read more...]

For the week of September 3, 2003 Louisiana College honor   In the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges, Louisiana College is ranked in the top tier in the Southern Region of the Best Comprehensive College’s - Bachelor’s listing. "We are obviously very pleased with this ranking," school President Rory Lee said. "This is a public measure of what we already know at Louisiana College, that the education we provide our students is top notch." Schools listed in this category focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs. There are 324 comprehensive colleges, ranked within four United States regions. To rank colleges, U.S. News first places each school into categories based on mission (research university or liberal arts college) and by location. Data is gathered from each school in 15 areas related to academic excellence. Colleges also are ranked against their peers. "That we are one of only two colleges in the state to be ranked on this prestigious list is a testament to the faculty and students of Louisiana College," Lee said. "This is quite an honor. The college community and our supporters and alumni should be very proud."   Ten … [Read more...]

These shoes feel wonderful, and they can double for bowling

Haircuts and buying shoes rank at the top of my "put it off as long as possible, then wait a while before doing" list. Haircuts and buying shoes rank at the top of my "put it off as long as possible, then wait a while before doing" list.   The disdain for haircuts began in my early days when mother would sit me on a tall stool, wrap a towel around my neck, and start cutting. We two boys could have any hairstyle we wanted, as long as it was a burr. Practicality ruled the day, and where we lived and in our economic condition, no hairstyle was more practical than a burr. Cutting a burr required no skill and it grew back slowly.   Mother used hand-powered clippers ordered from Montgomery and Wards (Monkey Wards). To this day, I am convinced the clippers should have been called "pullers" because they pulled out more hair than they cut.   Back to buying shoes. The Lord blessed me with bad feet. Where the blessing comes in I do not know, but I do not want to speak negatively of them because they have been with me for a lot of years and hopefully have many more miles to carry me.   So, few shoes ever gave me real comfort. Buying shoes means finding the least uncomfortable … [Read more...]

For the week of September 11, 2003 Cooperative Program Gifts through the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program totaled more than $16.7 million last month, an increase of $744,559 (4.7 percent) from the previous August. With just one month remaining in the Southern Baptist Convention’s fiscal year, overall gifts total a little more than $169 million, an increase of about $1.1 million (0.7 percent) from the same time last year. The total also stands more than $6.8 million (4.2 percent) ahead of budget. Meanwhile, designated gifts totaled just less than $5 million last month, an increase of more than $1 million (25.9 percent) from the previous August. For the year, designated gifts total $162.8 million, a decrease of about $4.1 million (2.5 percent) from 2002. Death penalty issue A federal appeals court has overturned some 111 death-penalty sentences, which likely will force the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify itself further on the issue. The federal court recently threw out death-penalty sentences from Arizona, Idaho and Montana. In those states, single judges can impose the death penalty in capital trials, whereas in many other states, only juries can impose execution on a convict. In one of a number of rulings … [Read more...]

Giving life purpose – it begins with God, study says

March 23, 2015

"Before they know just what to do Their souls are lost Because they could never find What’s this life for" - "What’s This Life For" Mark Tremonti/Scott Stapp "Before they know just what to do Their souls are lost Because they could never find What’s this life for" - "What’s This Life For" Mark Tremonti/Scott Stapp Contrary to the belief of many in a 21st-century, youth-obsessed world, Rick Warren insists there is something worse than the end of one’s life.   "The greatest tragedy is not death but life without purpose," Warren emphasizes in his mega best-selling book from 2002, "The Purpose-Driven Life."   Warren probably would agree the second-greatest tragedy is how many people actually are living without purpose.   He wants to change that.   Give him 40 days - and he thinks he can. To be more precise, give God 40 days - and he will change it, Warren insists.   That is the whole point of "The Purpose-Driven Life." And it is the whole reason why the book has taken the Christian world by storm. It has gained book of the year honors and is being used in churches and study groups throughout the nation.   The book offers … [Read more...]

LBC churches plan unified effort to win their area for Christ

March 23, 2015

This weekend, hundreds of Louisianians are expected to gather at Grant Parish junior and senior high schools but not just for the traditional Friday night football game. This weekend, hundreds of Louisianians are expected to gather at Grant Parish junior and senior high schools but not just for the traditional Friday night football game.   Twenty-nine Louisiana Baptist churches in Big Creek Association will conduct three-night simultaneous revivals at four locations. The revivals are set for Sept. 12-14 in three school auditoriums and one church.   The 29 churches participating in the revivals began planning the "cluster revivals" last year. The churches divided into four different regions in Grant Parish. Leaders in each region were responsible for assembling the evangelists and music for their revival.   "We felt we needed, as Baptists, to make a statement in Grant Parish and felt the best way to show unity was to hold these revivals together," says Leonard Free, evangelism director for the Big Creek association and pastor at New Prospect Baptist Church in Dry Prong. "This represents a fellowship between churches. We’re all in this together to show we’re not in competition but … [Read more...]

Louisiana church opening its doors to art patrons

With thousands of visitors expected to descend upon Alexandria for the Heart of Spain art exhibition, one local Louisiana Baptist church is hosting its own version of the exhibit.   Emmanuel Baptist Church’s art exhibit, "Heart of Spain Emmanuel," correlates with the Heart of Spain, a collection of 1,000 years of Spanish religious artwork that opened for public viewing Sept. 1 and will remain so until Nov. 30.   At that point, most of the artwork featured in the Heart of Spain exhibit will return to the museums, monasteries, convents and palaces throughout Spain.   Part of the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Celebration, the Heart of Spain exhibit features the first-time "this particular story of a thousand years of intertwined culture, conquest and civilization (has) been presented in the museum setting," the collection’s official Web site notes.   Some of the artists featured during the Heart of Spain are El Greco, Murillo, Ribalta and Goya. The Heart of Spain Web site says their work … [Read more...]
