By Baptist Message staff BATON ROUGE (LBM) - Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has signed a proclamation designating July as a month of prayer. Introduced by State Sen. Rick Edmonds, pastor with First Baptist Church, McComb, Mississippi, the proclamation calls “upon the people of Louisiana to come together during the month of July in a season of prayer and fasting, seeking God’s blessing, protection, and wisdom for our state and nation.” Jay Johnston, pastor with First Baptist Church, Melville, and leader with the digital prayer site, Somebodyspraying.com, said he is grateful for the state’s recognition of the importance of calling on the Lord. “There is no more urgent time to seek Him than now,” Johnston told the Baptist Message. "The world still stands in the shadow of wars, threats of war, and a growing spiritual unrest. So many souls remain unsaved, and so many prodigals need to return. May the Lord burden our hearts so that we go out and share Jesus, and as we go, let us be faithful to pray for an increase of laborers. May the churches of Louisiana recognize our desperation for God, and we call upon Him to work in our families and churches, to bring healing to our state, to forgive us of all our sinful ways, and to unify … [Read more...]
RPSO warns about scam targeting churches
By Baptist Message staff ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) - The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning for CENLA churches, cautioning them to be mindful of a new scam targeting them. According to the RPSO Facebook page, they were notified of the scam, June 27. “Apparently there is someone out there going through the trouble of identifying the members of the board of directors of churches and then sending emails to the church office, in hopes of acquiring the entire church membership directory,” RPSO posted. “For clarity, they did not hack the board member's email account or steal their identity. Rather they obtained the email address from open source and sent an email with the request. “We want to warn our followers to always check the email address when information is being requested from you. If you have not heard from this person requesting this information, give them a call to make sure it is them. “In our busy times, we sometimes answer emails without really paying attention to the email address. Most of the time the scammers invent an email address that looks very similar to the legitimate email address of the requestor. “Always delete emails that look suspicious.” … [Read more...]
Price named LBF executive director
By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – The Louisiana Baptist Foundation board of trustees has announced that Jared G. Price has been elected the 10th executive director of the entity, a ministry of the Louisiana Baptist Convention. “I am grateful for the trust the board has placed in me and honored to continue serving Louisiana Baptists in this new role,” Price told the Baptist Message. “I remain fully committed to our current strategic plan, the LBF Vision200, which aims to advance the Kingdom with $200 million or more in 20 years or less. Five years in, I’m encouraged to share that we have already seen a cumulative impact of over $76.9 million. As we look ahead, my prayer is that we continue to be good and faithful stewards of the resources entrusted to us and a trustworthy partner for Louisiana Baptists.” The announcement followed a unanimous vote by the board of trustees on June 24 after careful consideration of Price’s nomination by a search committee comprised of board members and chaired by Wendell Whetstone. Price, who assumes his new role on July 1, succeeds Jeffrey Steed, who retired as the Foundation’s executive director on May 31. Whetstone said Price’s qualifications … [Read more...]
President Trump: ‘We love you, God, and we love our great military. Protect them.’
Click here to watch the video. Transcript of President Donald J. Trump's address to the American public, June 21, 2025, regarding U.S. military strikes against Iran's nuclear bomb making capabilities. WASHINGTON -- Thank you very much. A short time ago, the U.S. military carried out massive, precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror. Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier. For 40 years, Iran has been saying, "Death to America, death to Israel." They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs, with roadside bombs. That was their specialty. We lost over 1,000 people and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East … [Read more...]
EVANGELISM 101 (Part 6): How to prepare? Pray!
By Will Hall, Baptist Message executive editor ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – M.E. Dodd, the former pastor of First Baptist Church, Shreveport, is most often celebrated for his leadership in establishing the Cooperative Program, Baptists’ primary funding channel for state and national cooperative missions and ministries, but the focus of his efforts on this initiative is too often underemphasized – soul winning. Indeed, Dodd’s entire ministry was defined by soul winning. During his first month with FBCS, he preached a revival, adding 98 new believers to the 600-member congregation. In early 1918 (as WWI raged), he volunteered to be a U.S. Army chaplain, eventually settling to be a camp religious worker with the YMCA attached to the Second Army and recorded 5,000 professions of faith that year. For the duration of his 50 years of ministry, he recorded 7,000 baptisms. Importantly, as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention, Dodd led a South-wide simultaneous crusade with “the ideal of at least one revival in every church throughout the South in 1945.” Especially noteworthy, his detailed plans for organizing the yearlong South-wide simultaneous crusade … [Read more...]
South Carolina executive director (Louisiana native) shares Cajun fishing lessons
By Baptist Message staff DALLAS (LBM) – South Carolina Baptist Convention Executive Director Tony Wolfe invited messengers to cast bread on the water to remember the generation who drove the growth of the Cooperative Program and to unite as the generation that continues its impact. “The Cooperative Program is not a foolproof investment,” Wolfe said. “But it is the best strategy we have to turn diverse, disparate tributaries into one roaring river.” Citing Ecclesiastes 11:1-6, Wolfe, a Louisiana native, shared memories of fishing on the riverbanks on the Comite and Amite Rivers and related them to the challenges Southern Baptists face today while urging them to push ahead with their cooperative global mission. Wolfe grew up in Baton Rouge, where his dad, Jim, was pastor with Brookstown Baptist Church (today, he is pastor with Ridge Avenue Baptist Church, West Monroe). Tony also served in Louisiana -- as music minister with Northside Baptist Church, Denham Springs, from 1999-2003. Wolfe emphasized that May 13, 1925 was a “watershed moment” for the Convention, when a group of Southern Baptists that included M.E. Dodd (pastor with First Baptist Church, Shreveport, at the time) gathered in Memphis, Tennessee, to found the … [Read more...]
2025 SBC Annual Meeting: Highlights from Dallas
By Baptist Message staff DALLAS (LBM) -- Southern Baptist Convention messengers and guests gathered June 10-11 in Dallas, Texas, to conduct business, elect officers, enjoy times of fellowship, receive updates on mission work done by Southern Baptists across the world and hear inspirational messages. Financial transparency motion defeated Messengers rejected an amendment, June 11, that would have required the Southern Baptist Convention to publish detailed financial information like disclosures that are made on IRS Form 990, the public tax document that shows executive compensation, major salary expenses and other financial details. The vote on the motion (to force greater financial transparency from denominational entities) presented by South Carolina messenger Rhett Burns was defeated by a show of ballots. Jeff Iorg, president and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee, strongly opposed the amendment, arguing that Southern Baptist entities fought legal battles decades ago to establish First Amendment protections from such reporting requirements -- although these disclosures would have been for the benefit of trustees and donors and not the government. ERLC retained Messengers voted to keep the Ethics and Religious … [Read more...]
Law Amendment (only men may serve as pastors) fails
By Baptist Message staff DALLAS (LBM) – An amendment that would have specified in the SBC Constitution that only men may serve as any kind of pastor or elder failed by messengers' vote, June 11. Messengers cast 3,421 for the Law Amendment (60.74 percent) and 2,191 against (38.90 percent). Because a super-majority was needed, the amendment failed. During the 2022 SBC Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, messenger Mike Law, also pastor with Arlington Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia, introduced a motion to amend Section III of the Southern Baptist Convention’s constitution to state that a church is in friendly cooperation with the SBC only if it “does not affirm, appoint, or employ a woman as a pastor of any kind.” The motion was referred to the Executive Committee and was brought before messengers during the 2023 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Texas messenger Juan Sanchez then presented an amendment phrased differently to the motion: Cooperating churches must “affirm, appoint, or employ only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture.” Eighty percent of messengers then approved the measure. The following year in Indianapolis, Indiana, messengers cast 5,099 ballots in favor (61.45 percent) … [Read more...]
Temple Baptist RA wins national Pinewood Derby at SBC
By Baptist Message staff DALLAS (LBM) – Callen Breaux, a sixth grader from Temple Baptist Church in Ruston, recently won the national Royal Ambassador Pinewood Derby. Held June 9 prior to the 2025 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting, the race featured 11 participants from around the SBC who competed inside the exhibit hall. Breaux, who won the Louisiana Baptist RA Congress Pinewood Derby race in April after competing in the state competition for two years previously, expressed excitement about coming in first place on the national level. Additionally, Louisiana Baptist Women’s Missions and Ministry Strategist Christine Gill won the Pinewood Derby race against other Woman’s Missionary Union state directors. RA Consultant Keith Gates (also a member of First Baptist Church, Winnfield) coordinated the event and Goldonna Baptist Church’s RA ministry provided the track. “I was really surprised and excited at the same time,” Breaux told the Baptist Message. “I just wanted to compete. Never thought I might win.” Breaux’s win marked the second consecutive year a Louisiana Baptist has won the national RA Pinewood Derby. Josiah Jones, then a fifth grader from Quitman Baptist Church, won the 2024 national Pinewood … [Read more...]
