October 31, 2023

By Will Hall, Baptist Message executive editor ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – Matt Endris, pastor of the Fairview Alpha Baptist Church near Coushatta, will be nominated for the office of first vice president with the Louisiana Baptist Convention during the 2023 annual meeting of church messengers. Philip Caples, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Coushatta, contacted the Baptist Message, Oct. 23, to share that he was “excited” to make the nomination because Endris “loves Jesus, loves and leads his family to follow Jesus, and leads his church to embrace the community, state and world for the purpose of reaching the lost for Jesus.” The yearly gathering of Louisiana Baptists is scheduled to be held in the facilities of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, Nov. 14. STATEMENT OF SUPPORT Caples said he has known Endris for 10 years and has been impressed with his faithfulness and service as a Baptist leader. “Matt has served as moderator of the Red River Association for two years and with numerous committees of the association as well,” Caples said. “He has served with the Louisiana Baptist Convention Executive Board for two terms, and he now serves as a board member with Gateway Seminary on behalf of the … [Read more...]

OCC celebrates 30 years of giving hope of Jesus to children at Christmas

October 30, 2023

By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer PINEVILLE, La. (LBM) – Louisiana Baptists will have the opportunity to join thousands across the world to share the ultimate gift to children in other countries during the 30th anniversary of Operation Christmas Child. Formed in 1993 by Samaritan’s Purse, OCC allows churches and individuals to bring gift-filled shoeboxes to relay stations across the country that are then processed and shipped to local partners around the world with a means of reaching out to children in their communities with the good news of Jesus Christ. National Collection Week is Nov. 13-20. Though the gifts are simple [small toys, hygiene items and school supplies] they still bring a smile to children who may be affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease. Mary Deen, an OCC regional spokesperson in Louisiana and a member of Journey Church, Pineville, told the Baptist Message the effort provides an opportunity for Christ followers to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children who may not receive any other gift. “Operation Christmas Child is one of the most effective evangelistic ministries,” she said. “According to our statistics released last month, because of our … [Read more...]

October 30, 2023

By Carmen Taffi, Wildcats Media PINEVILLE, La. (Wildcats Media) – Art imitates life in Theatre Louisiana Christian’s second show of the season, “Big Fish,” which opens Nov. 2. “Big Fish,” a musical by Andrew Lippa and John August, is based on a 1988 novel by Daniel Wallace. The musical takes the audience on a journey through Edward Bloom’s life, as he is battling cancer. Before he dies, Edward wants to share all his stories, dreams and experiences with his son. The audience is introduced to all the people Edward has crossed paths with who have ultimately changed his life. Tabitha Huffman, director of “Big Fish” and professor of theatre, found out recently her lifelong friend Tisha Falcon Lehfeldt is also battling cancer. Fehfeldt is battling for her life with a rare type of cancer and has mentored thousands of people. One of the reasons so many know Tisha is that along with teaching about Jesus Christ on church stages, she is an adored radio personality on the big Christian radio station in Honolulu. Ironically enough, this station is called “The Fish FM.” Her afternoon show is called “The Joyride.” “When my musical director Enrico Cannella and I chose to do this musical six months ago, I had no idea my … [Read more...]

Actress alum to speak at 8th annual Values and Ethics Series

October 27, 2023

By LCU News PINEVILLE, La. (LCU News) - Actress and Louisiana Christian University alumna Kayce Clark will deliver a message on the influence of the media in everyday life at the 8th Annual Values and Ethics Series, Nov. 2. “Our media-driven world is so easily influenced by what we see on screen, what we hear on the radio, and by the examples set by celebrities,” said Clark, advocacy director for Reflective Media Productions and a 2004 graduate of LCU with a degree in theater arts. “That influence is not going away and is growing by the day, but there is something we can do as a Christian community.” With an unwavering commitment to creating powerful theatre and film projects that not only entertain but also point to the truth of Jesus Christ, Clark has worked in the entertainment industry for more than 20 years.  She challenges audiences to use their talents and gifts to the glory of God and to guard against the negative impact of certain media. “Instead of shying away from media and entertainment venues, we are taking the tool Satan is using to try to destroy us and we are turning it on its head, and using it for the Kingdom,” Clark said. “Christian production companies, such as Reflective Media Productions, and … [Read more...]

Louisiana Baptists’ Mike Johnson elected House speaker

October 25, 2023

By Will Hall, Baptist Message executive editor WASHINGTON (LBM) – U.S. Congressman Mike Johnson, a member of Cypress Baptist Church in Benton, Louisiana, has been elected House speaker, meaning he is second in the line of succession if President Joe Biden should be unable to serve. Johnson garnered 220 Republican votes in favor versus 209 Democrat votes against in the Oct. 25 House vote. Two seats in the House are vacant (one Democrat, one Republican) and four members did not vote (three Democrats, one Republican). The office of speaker has been vacant since Oct. 3, when Matt Gaetz, a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, led a GOP minority (eight congressmen) to join with Democrats to oust Kevin McCarthy, a member of Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, California, from this key leadership position. The drama was amplified by the failures of Majority Leader Steve Scalise, also of Louisiana, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, of Ohio, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, of Minnesota, to capture enough support from their Republican colleagues to overcome the Democrats’ block of votes in their respective bids to be elected speaker. OVERWHELMING PRAISE Johnson has enjoyed overwhelming praise from … [Read more...]

Merelin McCon retires, returns to disciple others

October 24, 2023

By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer WALKER, La. (LBM) – Merelin McCon retired from Judson Baptist Church in 2010 but returned “home” in 2016 to teach a Bible study and disciple others at the church he pastored for 33 years. “It’s been awesome, and I have thankful I was able to return here,” McCon told the Baptist Message. “I didn’t even want to come to Judson to pastor here years ago. But I’m thankful I said, ‘Yes’ to that opportunity, and it’s been so special coming back and helping others grow in their walks with Christ.” McCon (who actively pastored 55 years) was named a Louisiana Baptist Convention Exemplary Bi-vocational Pastor of the Year for his dedication to ministry. A native of Colyell, McCon was 13 years old when he surrendered his heart to Christ during a service at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Baton Rouge. Four years later, McCon submitted to the call to preach the Gospel. He began his education to prepare for ministry at Louisiana College (now Louisiana Christian University), in 1957, and during his senior year began a pastorate with the Twin Bridges Baptist Church in Alexandria, two days after he married his wife, Edith. Later he served as pastor with Magnolia Baptist Church, Holden … [Read more...]

Arnold faithful during 26 years of trials, triumphs

October 24, 2023

By Brian Blackwell, Baptist Message staff writer GILBERT, La. (LBM) – For 26 years, Bobby Arnold has faithfully served Eureka Baptist Church amid his own personal trials. Arnold, who suffered a stroke in April 2020, said while he has faced difficult moments, he never has considered resigning from a church who has supported him throughout. “The Lord hasn’t led me to go anywhere else,” Arnold told the Baptist Message. “It’s a definite call and is something that I have been blessed to be a part of for all these years.” Arnold was named a Louisiana Baptist Convention Exemplary Bi-vocational Pastor of the Year for his dedication to ministry. Born in Franklin Parish in 1949, Arnold gave his heart to Christ as a 17-year-old at the weekly Sunday service at New Hope Baptist Church, Crowville, where he had started attending with his girlfriend at the time, Ruth Weems. A year later, Arnold married Ruth, became a deacon at New Hope Baptist and felt the call to preach the Gospel. However, he denied the call multiple times even amid service as a deacon and lay renewal leader at Wayside Baptist Church, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Finally, at 36, he surrendered to God’s call and began to fill the pulpit at Turkey Bluff … [Read more...]

What could the Lord do with your obedience?

October 24, 2023

By Marc Daniels AVONDALE, La. (LBM) -- I was reminded one morning of how nothing is wasted in the Lord’s economy. I have been pastoring at the same small church in the same hard-soil neighborhood for more than 22 years; and, at times, I get frustrated and wonder if my labor is making any kind of difference. We’re a community-based ministry and I’ve been a neighborhood pastor. Consequently, I often get calls from people I’ve never met, asking if I’d officiate a funeral for someone I don’t know. I try to make myself available as much as possible, but sometimes I feel a little bit hardened towards the idea because it seems such “outreach ministry” is unfruitful. Very few of such situated services I’ve presided over have resulted in people visiting the church, much less led to professions of faith. But I found myself having to repent when I was forced to recognize that the Lord is always at work, and He rewards even the slightest obedience with great blessings. My epiphany resulted from a phone call by a woman wanting to know if someone was available to lead a memorial service. I had to decline because of an out-of-town commitment on the requested date, but I offered to reach out to the other ministers on staff. I … [Read more...]
