BATON ROUGE, La. (LBM) – Don Mayes, who served as superintendent of Parkview Baptist School for the last 12 years, has resigned.

According to school Director of Advancement Jessica Province, Mayes resigned Oct. 28. A letter was sent to parents informing them of the announcement.

“Throughout his tenure, Dr. Mayes was instrumental in guiding Parkview Baptist School,” Province said in a statement to the Baptist Message. “With Dr. Mayes at the helm, Parkview Baptist School fostered an environment that reflected our mission, ‘… to seek first the Kingdom of God while providing students with a Christ-centered, college preparatory education that guides students to grow and mature in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man.’ Under his leadership, we saw tremendous growth both on our campus and in each of our students.”

The news comes after Mayes had been placed on a leave of absence in mid-October, though he was not accused of any criminal wrongdoing, the school said in a statement on Oct. 14 to WAFB-TV Baton Rouge.

“There is no criminal wrongdoing on Dr. Mayes’ part,” the school said at this time. “This action is part of an ongoing internal review, and we want to assure the community that the school remains focused on our students and maintaining the integrity of our operations.”

Now that he has resigned, the school will conduct a search for the next superintendent.

“We are committed to a thoughtful and thorough process in selecting a new superintendent who will continue to uphold the values and standards that make Parkview Baptist School truly unmatched in our community,” Province said. “We anticipate a nationwide search to begin in the near future. Please join us in expressing our heartfelt gratitude to Mayes for his many years of faithful service.”

According to the school website, Mayes won the 2018 Alumni Eagle Hall of Fame Award in Abundant Life, an award given to an alumnus who exemplifies a Christ-centered life and is considered an example and inspiration to all those around them.

Mayes holds degrees from Marshall University, Huntington, West Virgina, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina. Before coming to PBCC in 2012, Mayes served in various administrative and pastoral roles including Superintendent of Indian Rocks Christian School, Largo, Florida, and also served on the mission field in Uganda, Mexico, England, China, Romania and Ecuador.

The race of faith: a marathon, not a sprint

When I ran cross country, our training involved running Monday through Friday and, occasionally, optional Saturday runs. We did “easy” days, long-distance days, sprint days (the worst), and more, all to make sure that we were in the best shape possible for our 5k race — a little over three miles — which occurred … Read More
