Letlow shares story of hope during LCU Commencement

May 7, 2022

By Brian Blackwell, Message staff writer ALEXANDRIA, La. (LBM) – U.S. Congresswoman Julia Letlow told the Louisiana Christian University Class of 2022 graduates to remain hopeful when difficult days come. Speaking during the college’s 167th Commencement May 7 at the Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria, Letlow shared how her faith in Christ sustained her after her husband, Luke, died from COVID-19 complications, Dec. 29, 2020. He was just five days from taking office after he had won the election the month before to succeed Ralph Abraham, who retired from Congress. She later won the seat in a special election in March 2021. “The Holy Spirit stepped in to sustain me in the hard days that followed after Luke's death, to take my next breath, to put one foot in front of the other, to care for my children, and to eventually run for the same seat held by my husband, in order to continue a dream that the Lord put in both our hearts: to serve this community,” she said. “It was during this immensely difficult time in my life that the Lord showed me that two things can be true at once. “A person can be full of grief and still choose hope for the future,” she continued. “And it is that message of hope put into action that I want to impart … [Read more...]

Letlow issues statement on the Supreme Court’s draft opinion

May 5, 2022

MONROE, La. - Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-05) has released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s draft opinion in the Dobbs case: "It is my hope that the Supreme Court is preparing to firmly state that our country will allow our people to stand for life and protect the rights of the unborn. It has taken decades of hard work, advocacy, and prayer for us to arrive at this moment. Louisiana is poised to be a national leader in defending life when a decision is issued in the Dobbs case. However, the leak of this information is an obvious attempt to obstruct the Supreme Court’s deliberative process. I look forward to the day when an offical opinion is issued." … [Read more...]

United Way, BCM announce Summer Impact Grants

May 5, 2022

By Baptist Community Ministries NEW ORLEANS, La. United Way of Southeast Louisiana, in partnership with Baptist Community Ministries, has announced the 2022 Summer Impact Grant opportunity to expand and deepen summer services for New Orleans children and youth. “United Way’s Blueprint for Prosperity, our plan to tackle poverty, calls for proactive collaboration to create the critical impact necessary to address systemic problems and disparities that keep holding our city’s youth back,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA president and CEO. “We’re grateful to partner with BCM again on this urgent effort to align and bolster summer programming at a time when it’s needed most.” UWSELA and BCM will allocate $500,000 to youth-serving organizations to increase education, health and workforce supports over the summer – often a time of vulnerability for low-income youth due to the lack of daily school and supports provided in a school setting. Interested existing summer programs must operate in Orleans Parish, align with the New Orleans Youth Master Plan and focus on serving young people of color, ages 11 to 24, living below the ALICE Threshold. More than 68 percent of youth in the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods live in … [Read more...]
